Jose Munoz Cardenas, Sr., 68, passed away Saturday, March 7, 2020, at his home with his family surrounding him with Love. “God has opened His arms because He needed a baker in Heaven”
Public viewing will be from 1:00 PM until 8:00 PM Sunday, March 8, 2020, and from 8:30 AM until 8:00 PM Monday, March 9, 2020, with the rosary being prayed at 6:00 PM Monday, March 9, 2020, at Robert Massie Riverside Chapel. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 AM Tuesday, March 10, 2020, at Holy Angels Catholic Church with Father Charles C. Greenwell, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens under the direction of Robert Massie Funeral Home.
Mr. Cardenas was born December 5, 1951, in San Angelo to Elijio and Enedina Cardenas. Jose was a veteran of the US Army serving during the Vietnam Conflict from 1968 until 1971. Jose married Cynthia Hogeda on May 24, 1969, in San Angelo. After he discharged from the army he worked in construction, working for Western Iron Works. Jose realized his passion was to be a baker, he began working for M System, Buddies, Winn-Dixie and Furr's. In 1998 Jose opened a family business "Heavenly Donuts", when he semiretired he worked at Texas Test Fleet. The most important thing to him was his family. He enjoyed boat riding, camping, gambling and traveling. He never met a stranger; he would strike up a conversation with anyone. Jose was a member of the Holy Angels Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by his father, Elijio Cardenas.
Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Cynthia of the home; two daughters, Brenda Andrade and husband Robert, and Jennifer Cardenas and companion Ruben Contreras; his son, Joe Cardenas, Jr. and wife Nalda; eight grandchildren, Bill Goedde, Jessica Torres, Kimberly Gonzales, Gabriel Cardenas, Joe Michael Cardenas, Emily Hill, Marissa Hill, and Jonathan Cardenas; five great grandchildren, Damien Martinez, Chloe Lopez, Scarlett Gonzalez, Jesse James Cardenas, and Julius Cardenas; his mother Enedina Cardenas; two sisters, Rosalinda Rivas and Eva Escobedo; and a brother, Carlos Cardenas. The family would like to extend a special thank you to Encompass Rehab in Abilene, Kindred Hospice of San Angelo and to family and friends who supported us through this difficult time.
 

Rogelio Costilla Rodriguez, age 87, of Knickerbocker, TX, passed away on Saturday, March 7th, 2020. Rogelio was born to Esteban and Andrea Rodriguez in Morelos Coah. Mexico on January 22nd, 1933. He married the love of his life Concepcion N. Rodriguez on March 1st, 1959, in Zaragosa, Mexico. Rogelio was a lifelong resident of Knickerbocker. He loved being outdoors and worked as a dairy farmer until he retired, after which he spent his time taking care of his animals; goats, lambs and chickens.

Rogelio is preceded in death by his parents Esteban and Andrea Rodriguez, his wife Concepcion N. Rodriguez, his son Albert Rodriguez, and his granddaughter Bianca Rodriguez.

He is survived by his children Lydia Rodriguez, Ruben Rodriguez & Kim Conner, Rick Rodriguez and Alma Rodriguez; grandchildren Johnny Arredondo & partner Madison DeLawder, Javier Almazan II, Jorge Rodriguez, Andrea and Istevan Pacheco, and Kelly Pleyo; great-grandchildren Luis and Julian Arredondo, Addison and Jade Jones, and Christopher and Sophia Pleyo. He was dearly loved by many and will be truly missed.

Pallbearers are Johnny Arredondo, Javier Almazan II, Jorge Rodriguez, Istevan Pacheco, Julian Arredondo, and Emilano Robles. Honorary pallbearers are Matt Sexton, Louie Gutierrez, Billy Wilson, Kelly Roe, Pat Pierce, Dwaine Elvick, Jerry Monroe, and Kyle Bailey.

A public visitation will be held at Johnson’s Funeral Home on Friday, March 13th, 2020 at 4:30 PM, followed by a rosary service at 6:30 PM. Funeral mass will take place on Saturday, March 14th at 11 AM at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Knickerbocker, officiated by Father Joseph Vathaloor, followed by interment at Knickerbocker Cemetery.

Irene Jones Ussery was born on August 9, 1924 and passed away on March 7, 2020.

David Leon Bain, 80, of San Angelo, Texas passed away Saturday, March 7, 2020 at his residence. Leon was born June 19, 1939 on a farm near Meadow, Texas in Terry County to Benjamin Franklin "Frank" Bain and Margaret Fredonia (Banks) Bain.

He graduated from Ropes High School, Ropesville, Texas in 1957 and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Agricultural Economics from Texas Tech University, Lubbock, Texas in 1966. He married Mary Ann Wallace and they raised three daughters in San Angelo.

Leon had a long career in Information Technologies, computer programming and engineering with various companies including GTE Data Services, BMC Software, and Northrop Grumman.

Survivors include his daughters LeAnn Bain of Temple, Texas; Karen Bain of San Angelo, and Janette Bain Hubbard of Denton, Texas. His beloved grandchildren, Emily Belle Westbrook, David Coby Hubbard, Matthew Lane Hubbard, and Madison ElizabethAnn Hubbard. A sister and brother-in-law Sandra and Jerry Haley of Lampasas, Texas, a brother John Bain of Wolfforth, Texas, special nieces and nephews, and extended family and friends.

He will be buried at Ropes Cemetery in Ropesville, Texas where the family will gather for a graveside service on Sunday, March 15, 2020.

Fernando Manuel Bara III of San Angelo passed away March 4, 2020 at the age of 35. He was born on May 23, 1984 in San Angelo Tx. Fernando is survived by his mother Maria Escobedo Blanco and step-father Robert Blanco and Father Mario Bara, grandmother Juanita Escobedo, step-grandparents Albert and Sylvia Blanco, siblings Claudia Alvarado and husband Jesse, Monica Arocha, John Edward Robles and Fiancé Veronica Castorena, Lindsey Blanco, Robert Blanco Jr and wife Jubilee, Mario J. Bara, and Emily Bara, Darla Kay Cardenas and husband Sergio. Nieces and nephews: Naudya Alvarado, Gabriel Leyva, Zaylin Atliano, Mason Bara, Jesslyn Alvarado, Robert Blanco, and Aryiah Robles. Uncle Hector Escobedo and wife Monica, Aunt Debbie Heachton and numerous aunts uncles and cousins who loved him dearly, and his beloved dog Marley. He is proceeded in death by his grandparents Joe Escobedo, Emmalee Bara and Manuel Fernandez Bara.
Fernando was awarded most handsome at Edison Jr. High and was a member of the Central High School gymnastics team, he graduated from Central High School in 2002 and later became a well known electrician. He loved fishing and camping, barbequing with friends and family. Fernando was an avid fan of the Texas Longhorns and loved spending time watching TX Longhorn Football. He adored spending time with his nieces and nephews who he loved deeply and spending countless hours with his fur baby Marley. He had a heart of gold and loved his family and friends to the fullest.
Rosary will be prayed Monday, March 9, 2020 at 7:00pm at Harper Funeral Home, mass at 10am Tuesday, March 10, 2020 at St. Mary’s church in San Angelo, burial will follow at Calvary Catholic Cemetery.

Dr. Helen Nixon peacefully stepped through the doorway of eternity to see her Lord, Jesus Christ face to face on Tuesday, February 25, 2020 at the age of 96 in San Angelo, Texas. Helen was born on November 16, 1923 in Powderly, Texas to James Bunyan “Bun” and Beulah Dena Nixon. She was the seventh of eight children, 5 girls and 3 boys. Early years were spent in the Snyder, Texas area and in 1937, the family moved to Whiteface, Texas where Helen finished her high school years. She was a basketball, softball and volleyball standout, and graduated as Valedictorian of her class in the Spring of 1941.
At the age of 12, Helen surrendered her life to Jesus Christ, and over the next few years, began to feel a calling to become an overseas missionary. She enrolled at Baylor University in the fall of 1941, majoring in Bible and attended on scholarship all four years there, obtaining her Bachelors’ degree in the Spring of 1945. Her first and continued love throughout her life was in teaching Bible.
She made history by being the first female enrolled at Golden Gate Seminary in Mill Valley, California in the fall of 1945, graduating with a Masters’ of Religious Education in the Spring of 1949. Her education would later continue through Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary where she obtained her Doctorate in Religious Education in July of 1967.
Helen entered the mission field in 1949 after graduating Golden Gate Seminary and was commissioned by the International Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention. She would spend the next 32 years of her life ministering to the Spanish-speaking people in several different regions of Argentina. She took a brief sabbatical to earn her doctorate at SWBTS. She was honored by Golden Gate Seminary as Alumna of the Year in 1983 and after serving her final years as a home missionary in Oklahoma, would fully retire in 1988. Helen never married, spending her life dedicated to her Lord and in the spreading of His gospel.
She was a feisty and tenacious personality, as most of her friends and family can attest to! She was outspoken and direct, and she was very competitive when it came to games. She loved playing Scrabble (she even created a Solitaire version!) and 42 with her friends.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, as well as all her siblings. She is survived by nephews Dwayne Overman (Kathy) of Eastland, Texas, Marlin Overman (Linda) of Cisco, Texas, Fred Overman (Tina) of Cooper, Texas, Dennis Nixon (Maxine) of China Springs, Texas, Niece Brenda Nixon Lewis of Mason, Texas as well as numerous other great nieces and nephews and many, many friends and colleagues.
Services for Helen will be on Saturday, March 7, 2020 at Harris Avenue Baptist Church (1026 East Harris Avenue) at 11:00am, with a family meal at the church afterward. A special thanks to Park Plaza Nursing Home (especially Sherrie Scott and Laura Coffey) for their special care of Helen, along with all the nurses from West Texas Rehab’s Hospice of San Angelo for their loving care of her in her final days.
Helen’s favorite expression was “it’s the gospel that works, not us (our job is to communicate the gospel and let it play itself out in people’s hearts)” and her favorite scripture comes from Romans 8:28…”And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to His purpose for them.”
Thank you for your lifelong obedience to the Lord’s calling to the foreign mission field my friend….and in Helen’s famous last words each time she parted your company…..”the Lord bless”.

John Horace "Took" Edwards passed away Wednesday, March 4, 2020. Took was born April 14, 1930, on the family farm near Wall, Texas. He was the third of five sons born to John T. and Mary Elizabeth Hemphill Edwards. After completing his first ten grades at Wall School, he graduated from San Angelo High School in 1948. He then attended San Angelo College, studying agriculture and was president of the Concho Aggies. He married Dorothy Louise Stevens November 3, 1950, in Mertzon. They resided in San Angelo and the Wall area and had four children.
Took was involved in farming and ranching all his life. He spent his early years exhibiting sheep on the stock show circuit, operated a feed store, and later bought and sold land while farming and raising sheep and cattle in Tom Green and Concho counties. He rarely missed Tuesday's sheep auction at Producers, a farm sale, or school sporting events. He met many people over the years, and in his circle of friends and acquaintances "everyone knew his name". Took was a member of the Wall Gun Club, an honorary member of the Wall Young Farmers and FFA, a 12-year director on the Tom Green County Soil and Conservation Board, a lifetime member of San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo committee, working with the Simmental Cattle Show for a number of years . He was proud of receiving a Texas Family Land Heritage Award in 2002 because his farm land had been in his family for over 100 years. He had to retire at the age of 83 because of declining health and a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease.
He lost his beloved wife Dorothy August 16, 2019.
Predeceasing him were his parents; son John Wiley Edwards and wife Sherrill Kaye Holland Edwards; brothers and sisters-in-law George and Nora Edwards, Eugene and Bernice Edwards, and Hubert Edwards; brother-in-law Elmo E. Berman and his wife Corene. Also, nephews Tommy Edwards and James Glen Berman; and nieces Marlu Edwards Riemer and Deborah Ann Edwards
He is survived by one son and his wife, Steven and Marilyn Edwards of San Angelo; two daughters and their spouses, Margo and Glenn Dierschke of San Angelo and Kim and Earl Krieg of Whitney, Texas. Also, seven grandchildren and two great-granddaughters : twins Allison Edwards of Austin and Courtney Edwards of Dallas; Drew Dierschke of San Angelo; Kaycee Krieg (and Jeff) Wysaski of Los Angeles, California; Krystal Krieg (and John) Leedy and their daughter Lorelai of Austin; Meagan Dierschke, her fiance Nick Mendoza, and their daughter Lilith, of Austin; and John
Taylor Edwards of San Angelo. He leaves behind his brother Don Edwards and his wife Shirley of Midland and his sister-in-law Ann Edwards of Paint Rock. Also, his nieces: Francine Gilbert, Bonny Slaughter, Twilah Jansen, Cyndy Thornton, Vicki Wyse, Penny Williams, Sharon Till, and Linda Van Sickle. And his nephews: Kelly, Eric, Randy, Gene, Dale and Lee Edwards.
Pallbearers will be Drew Dierschke, Tanner Edwards, Randy Edwards,
Gene Edwards, Dale Edwards, and Gary Gilbert. Honorary pallbearers are Doyle Schniers, Darrell Schniers, Billy Schniers, and Bill Westbrook.
Services will be held at Harper Funeral Home Monday, March 9, at 2:00 pm. Before the service, a visitation will begin at 1:30 pm. Burial will follow at Lawnhaven Cemetery. Officiating will be Pastor Mills Caraway.
The family would like to thank his physician Dr. Roberta Hinshaw and the staffs of Regency House and St. Gabriel's Hospice for the care he received during his final days. Memorials may be made to a charity of your choice.

Nita Allen Archer was born April 19, 1927, to Robert B. and Madie (Gaston) Allen, early Coke County settlers of Silver, Coke County Texas, the eleventh of twelve children. She attended elementary school at Silver, graduated from Robert Lee High School in 1943, and from San Angelo Junior College in 1945 where she was Valedictorian.

She married William L. (Bill) Archer in San Angelo August 23, 1946, at First Christian Church. Bill was from Kopperl, Texas, and was a B-17 pilot stationed at Mathis Field, flying cadet bombardiers. He had been sent to Mathis Field after his convalescence from wounds received on his 26th mission over Germany during World War II. Bill and Nita were blessed with four children: William L., Jr. (Lance), Rebecca Louise, Timothy Allen and Susan Rosemary. Together, Nita and Bill knew faith in God, faithfulness in each other, the blessings of children, family and friends and the value of hard work. In 1948, Bill and Nita started The Floor Covering Shop and worked together for over 50 years. Their children worked there also during the early years. The business continues today and is operated by Tim and Babbie Archer as Archer Floor Covering.

Nita and Bill were active members of First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) for over 65 years and served as elders for many years. They enjoyed and appreciated the fellowship of the Henson Class, as well as the rest of their Church family. Nita was a charter member of the board of The Children’s Emergency Shelter where she served as Secretary for 18 years. She also served on the ASU United Campus Ministries Board as Secretary, and on the board of Project Dignidad. In 2011, Nita was honored by Angelo Stated University at homecoming activities as the “Golden Ex”, one who has been graduated for 50 years or more.

Nita loved the church and loved singing in the choir and working at the church on various committees and in Christian Women’s Fellowship activities. In earlier years, Nita and Bill taught in the Primary Department for several years. They were sponsors for the Chi Rho and CYF youth groups later. They enjoyed and appreciated the fellowship of the Henson Class, as well as the rest of the Church family. Nita had Girl Scout and Boy Scout Troops and a 4-H Club group in her home when the Archer children were young. Nita belonged to the P.E.O. Sisterhood, Symphony Guild, and in earlier years Victory Study Club and Beta Sigma Phi. Bill and Nita were avid bridge players and for many years, played in two couples bridge clubs.

Nita and Bill enjoyed traveling to many places in the world, but most of all loved their home in San Angelo on Lake Nasworthy where they had many extended family gatherings. In their retirement years, they enjoyed restoring Bill’s grandparents’ 1884 home in Kopperl, Texas for a family retreat. They also acquired Nita’s family farm and spent happy hours working there. They enjoyed trips to many parts of the world and especially the trips with the 447th Bomb Group, which included members of Bill’s B-17 crew from World War II.

Nita was preceded in death by her parents, and 11 siblings. She is survived by her husband Bill of 73 years, their four children, their spouses, 8 grandchildren, and 6 great grandchildren: Lance Archer and wife, Linda, of San Angelo; Rebecca Archer Hardeman and husband, Bryan, of Austin, and their children, Will Hardeman and wife, Anna and their daughter Lily; Genny Hardeman Hill and husband, Chris and their children James William and Margot, and Joy Hardeman all of Austin; Tim Archer and wife, Babbie, of San Angelo and their children, Adri Archer Graves, and daughters, Gwyneth Mae and Evelyn, of Houston; Libby Archer Cooper and husband Nick and son Wells of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Molly Archer of San Angelo; Dr. Susan Archer Chiarito and husband Vince of Vicksburg, Mississippi and their daughters, Mary Alyce and Cicily; a sister-in-law Wilma Allen of Abilene; the children and families of Nita’s departed siblings, special cousins and Bill’s relatives.

Nita loved God, her family and friends, her church, our country, and appreciated each day of life. Other joys were flowers, music, reading, seashells, and the color blue. She was a joyful person who knew happiness is a journey and not a destination.

Pallbearers include Bob Odom, Joey Clegg, Jerry Knous, Charles Allcorn, Fr. Tom Lowe, Chuck Lanehart, David Lanehart, and Finis Allen. Honorary Pallbearers are Lynne Alexander and Jim and Betty Whitten.

A visitation will be held from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Monday, March 9, 2020 at Johnson’s Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, March 10, 2020 at First Christian Church with interment to follow in McKenzie Cemetery.
