Tracy Hollway Saunders

02/28/2024 - 09:41 , by TKing09

Tracy Hollway Saunders, 59, died in San Antonio after a lengthy illness on Friday, Feb. 23, 2024.

Tracy was born March 3, 1964, in San Angelo to Bob and Lexie Hollway. She was the oldest of four children and graduated from Wall High School, where she excelled academically and won numerous writing awards.

Nothing defined Tracy more than her heart. Throughout her life, wherever she lived, she was known for helping people when they needed it most. She was a mother to far more people than just her four children. Over the years, she adopted countless kids and a fair share of adults, and she made all of their lives better. She was kind to a fault, and she always saw the best in people. She always believed people could be saved, no matter how far down they had fallen. She never stopped trying to make the world a better place, and she did. She was also a beloved caregiver in homes and nursing homes, and she brightened the day of many of her residents over the years. It wasn't just a job for her. She was heartbroken anytime she lost someone. Tracy was a free spirit who lived all over Texas and briefly in California. Waco, Odessa, Andrews, Panhandle, Abilene, Crowell and San Bernardino were some of the towns she called home.

She made friends everywhere she went. She had a quirky sense of humor and a wonderful laugh to match it. She lived life to the fullest. When she listened to music, she turned it up loud and sang her heart out. She made every road trip a fun experience. She took her family on camping trips that will never be matched. All of her kids' friends knew her as the world's coolest mom, and she was. No matter the situation, she always found a way. She was tough and made the best of bad times. She was more concerned with others than herself.

In her later years, Tracy was a full-time grandma and never missed her grandkids' games if she could help it. She grew to love volleyball and track and field, and she traveled all around the area to support Veribest and Water Valley. Tracy also enjoyed just watching TV with her mom in the evenings and spending time with her family.

Tracy is survived by her mother, Lexie; sons Paul and Matthew; daughters Stephanie (and husband Chad) and Lexie (and husband Daron); grandchildren Cameron, Ashtyn, Ben, Addi, Liam, Edison, Nolyn, Graci, James, Maddy, Alexander and Cecilia; brothers Bobby, Cameron and Tony; sister Edie (and husband Andy); nephews Garrett, Hugh and Hudson; niece Hannah; uncle Pat; aunt Gayle; and numerous cousins.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 29, 2024, at Johnson's Funeral Home in San Angelo. Burial will follow at Robert Lee Cemetery.

Walter Noelke

02/27/2024 - 09:12 , by TKing09

Walter Dietrich Noelke, PhD., 83, passed away Friday, February 23, 2024, in San Angelo.

Graveside Service will be at 2:00 PM Wednesday, February 28, 2024, at Fairmount Cemetery with The Rev. Matthew Rowe, rector, Emmanuel Episcopal Church, officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Robert Massie Funeral Home.

He was born April 30, 1940 in San Angelo. He grew up in Menard, where he was affectionately known as "Butch." His father was Montgomery Blackwell "Sonny" Noelke, and his mother was Anease Volkmann Noelke. His beloved stepfather was Garnet Tolbert "Tol" Bailey, Jr. In 1949, Walter was struck with polio in the famous epidemic of that year. He lived in an iron lung in the basement of the Shannon Hospital; he was forever grateful for the women of San Angelo who would rush to the hospital when a storm threatened to hand-pump the iron lung in the case of a power failure. He recovered from polio and became a football player at Menard High School, where he graduated. He received his BA degree from the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. Duke University was his next academic endeavor. He then changed his career goals and studied government at the University of Texas in Austin where he met Virginia McKimmon. They married in 1968 and remained married until his death. Walter and Virginia both taught at Angelo State University, in the government and history departments respectively. Some of Walter's students called him "Dr. Doom" because he was such a tough and demanding professor. Yet most of his former students remember him fondly for his knowledge, wit, and sense of humor. He was always quick with a joke or an interesting story. Walter was also involved in ranching and the oil & gas business, always striving to protect the land from any damage. Walter spent his retirement years working hard to support the things he believed in. His faith in education led him to provide numerous internships, endowments, and scholarships for Menard youth, students at Angelo State University, and the children at West Texas Boys' Ranch and the Concho Valley Home for Girls. He enjoyed working with the San Angelo Area Foundation to steward his charitable resources. His biggest priority was funding the reconstruction of the missing barracks and mess hall at Fort Concho. The new building will house many artifacts of the Fort Concho era as well as an incredible book collection that Walter assembled over the decades, including books featuring Western history and San Angelo in particular. Walter provided significant funding for the Lady in Blue and Jumano Indian sculptures along the Concho River. Most people never knew of Walter's philanthropy and generosity because he valued anonymity during his lifetime. It was always important to Walter to honor family heritage, support the education of future generations, and remember history. Hopefully his many contributions will encourage others to keep our history and legacy alive.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia; his son, Hal Hoelke and wife Tracey; his grandchildren, Wade, Anna, and Henry; his step-grandchildren, Luke and Levi Oliver; and his sister, Gretchen. Walter is preceded in death by his brother, M.B. "Monte" Noelke, Jr.

The family asks that any donations be made in Walter's honor to Ft. Concho or the San Angelo Area Foundation.

Reba Gray

02/27/2024 - 09:09 , by TKing09

Our beautiful Mother was known for her flamboyant style, hard work ethic, yummy down-home cooking with the occasional exotic dish, and living life to the fullest. She was always ready to experience new adventures with family and friends, enjoying the journey there as well as the visit!

Reba O'liene Gray, 81 years of age, residing for the last five years in Michigan, quietly and peacefully passed on for all eternity into the arms of her Saviour, Jesus Christ, and the presence of God Almighty. She suffered from Alzheimer's Disease, which not only took her mind many years ago, but eventually her body, as well, on February 20, 2024, at 3:35 AM.

Reba was born in San Angelo, on June 16, 1942, to Owen and Jimmie Gray, who owned West Texas Trailer Company. She attended Santa Rita Elementary, Robert Lee Junior High and graduated from San Angelo Central High School. She always recounted adventures she had with her best friends, LaRue, Sylvia, and Jackie.

Reba went on to get her bachelor's degree at Baylor University, and her master's degree from Angelo State University, years later. Reba loved being a teacher and a tutor. Her favorite was teaching middle school students, especially 7th graders. She often said they still had a curiosity for learning and were fun to teach. Reba often taught math, computer science, English, and science. As an English teacher, she loved teaching through plays, books, and movies and often took her students on field trips. She enjoyed being involved in the local civic theatre wherever she lived. A few of her favorite sayings were, "ain't, ain't a word", and "can't never could".

Reba was never one to sit still for long. Besides working full-time jobs, over the years, she would sell Avon, Mary Kay, Tupperware, and Amway. She was always cooking something to take to a church gathering or someone needing a meal. For many family Thanksgiving dinners, she would bring someone who didn't have a place to go. Whenever anyone needed a helping hand, she was there to pitch in, whether it be gardening, moving or cleaning, she never shied away from hard work.

Ever active, Reba enjoyed sports and being outdoors. She was a competitive skeet shooter, played volleyball and was on the swim team in high school and college, going hunting and fishing with family and friends. While attending Baylor University in Waco, she was a Baylor Beauty and placed first runner up in the Miss Waco Pageant. She loved gardening, and quilting and was an accomplished seamstress. She loved camping and was fascinated by all of nature, especially its beauty.

Reba loved any kind of music, loved to dance, and had a beautiful soprano voice, singing in the choir through school and college and in church choirs, all of her life. She grew up attending the First Baptist Church of San Angelo, and made a profession of faith, following with water baptism, when she was still in elementary school. Reba loved reading her Bible and had several that she studied and read from, over the years. She considered herself a perpetual student of God's teachings and enjoyed participating in many Bible study groups, from a variety of church groups, as well as listening to preachers over the radio and TV.

Reba loved her family and always kept in touch with them all over the country, writing cards, calling on the phone, and visiting them. She doted on her grandchildren and visited them every chance she could. She made them blankets, quilts, and had fun swimming and playing with them. Reba has two daughters, Lisa (Moore) Dams and Charlene (Carnes) Phillips, along with four grandchildren, Martin Dams, Stuart Dams, Stormie Phillips, and Charlie Phillips.

Reba was preceded in death by her mother and father, and her older brother, Richard L. Gray, along with many cousins, aunts, and uncles. She is survived by her sisters, Freda Connell of Spring, Texas, Janette Aldridge of San Angelo, and a brother, Owen Gray of San Angel, along with nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The funeral service will be 1:00 PM Saturday, March 2, 2024, at Robert Massie Riverside Chapel in San Angelo. Graveside farewell will follow at Lawnhaven Cemetery under the direction of Robert Massie Funeral Home.

Please make donations to your local Salvation Army.

Juanita Ellen Becknell

02/27/2024 - 09:06 , by TKing09

Juanita Stovall Becknell passed from this life into the arms of her Lord and Savior on February 23, 2024, surrounded by her family.

She was born on June 4, 1927, at her aunt’s home in San Angelo. She married Neal Becknell on July 16, 1942, and was with him for 73 years before Neal passed away.

She has a long, happy and productive life. She wore many hats during her time: She was a wife, mother, grandmother, sister, fisherwoman, painter, seamstress, crafter, mentor, and a gardener, among other names. She taught us what it meant to be a Christian.

She was preceded in death by the lover of her life, Neal, as well as her three brothers, two sons-in-law and her parents.

Left behind to cherish her memory are their children; Danny Becknell (Jerrie), Judy McGuire, Betty Mills, Sid Becknell (Betty Jo), and her sister, Hazel Harvey. She is also survived by an abundance of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.

To honor the memory of the wonderful lady she was, please consider a donation to Hospice of San Angelo or Calvary Baptist Church in lieu of flowers.

The family would like to express gratitude to the staff at St. Angelus Assisted Living for being her second family for over five years. They truly treated her with love and took care of her as if she were their own mother. They would also like to thank you for the prayers, phone calls and visits during this time.

The funeral service will be conducted at Harper Funeral Home on Thursday, February 29, 2024, at 2:00 PM. The pallbearers will be great-grandsons, Daylon Saenz, Tyler Salinas, Dryden Groat, Josh McGuire, Mason McGuire, and Caleb McGuire.

Juanita often told us how she wanted her story to read: “She was born, she lived, she died.” However, her story was much more than one phrase could ever describe.

Norma Janet Cummings

02/27/2024 - 09:04 , by TKing09

Norma Janet Cummings, an adored mother and grandmother, went home to be with the Lord on February 24, 2024. She was born in San Angelo, TX to Carson and Edna (Hudgins) Seals. She graduated from San Angelo High School in 1954, just one day before marrying the love of her life, Robert Kent Cummings. They were married for 36 years, where they modeled the importance of love and family, before his passing in 1990.

They had two children, Carson and Julie, and Norma was known to several of their friends as a second mom or as many called her “Mama Cummings.” Her home was always known as a place for their friends to gather for a glass of Kool-Aid and a snack while running around the neighborhood.

She worked for Concho Valley Council of Government, as a Financial Officer, where she remained a devoted employee for over 30 years. After retirement, she volunteered as the receptionist at First Baptist Church, where she was a member for nearly 70 years. She was very active in the single’s ministry, after the death of her husband, where she became close with several women who became very dear friends. She enjoyed traveling, playing games, and the company of these special ladies for several years. To be loved by Norma was a gift. Everyone who knew her knew that she was extremely kind, a wonderful listener, patient, loyal, and generous.

Norma was an avid gardener and could always be found outside in her flowerbeds. She loved gardening so much that she eventually received her certification as a Master Gardener. She also enjoyed bowling and played in various bowling leagues. Norma was an amazing cook and baker and was known for many of her homemade recipes, including her infamous cookies. She always said, “the messier the kitchen, the better the food tastes.”

Her greatest joy was her family. She was a devoted mother and grandmother. She truly enjoyed spoiling her family, especially her grandchildren. Her grandchildren’s favorite memories were spending Sunday afternoons at her house, playing countless hours of board games, eating sweet treats, sorting coins, and getting into the toy chest. Norma never missed a sports game, choir concert, band performance, awards ceremony, or school play. She was her family’s greatest supporter and encouraged each of them to run towards their dreams.

She died at age 87 after a valiant battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She is preceded in death by her parents Carson and Edna Seals, her husband Robert Kent Cummings, and her brother Harold Seals. She is survived by her son Carson (Marla) Cummings and her daughter Julie (Tommy) Moran both of San Angelo, TX. She is also survived by her four grandchildren: Ashley (Chance) Barnett, Jill (Chris) Lovett, Ryan (Hope) Moran, and Jacob Moran as well as her great- grandchildren Mason, Nathan, Zane, and Cooper.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 28, 2024, from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Harper Funeral Home. Her service will be held at First Baptist Church San Angelo on Thursday February 29, 2024, at 10:00 AM, with pastor Greg Breedlove officiating. A graveside service will be held immediately following the service at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens.

The family would like to thank Tessa Wilson, Rhonnye Russell, and the staff at Baycrest Memory Care Facility for loving and caring for Norma for the last year and a half. The family also suggests, in lieu of flowers, that donations be made to First Baptist Church San Angelo in her memory.
