Linda Lee Wilson Sylva

02/03/2025 - 10:58 , by TKing09

Linda Lee Wilson Sylva went to be with the Lord early in the morning of February 1, 2025. She was 84 years old, born May 23, 1940, in Port Arthur, Texas. Linda grew up with her sister, Betty, and visited their Mississippi relatives twice a year. Beginning piano lessons at 7 years old, Linda continued teaching and playing throughout her life, for church and various audiences in the community. Organizing and working with children’s singing groups were part of her life as well.

Growing up in Port Arthur, Linda enjoyed church activities, and her group of close girlfriends called, “the Gang.” She was also a strong swimmer and played sports. In junior high, she walked and rode bicycles 2 miles to school, with neighbors, and special friend, Pat Fisher. Early Saturday morning piano lessons were the result of finding a Julliard graduate to teach her; this meant riding the city bus across town, as a 12-year-old!

The family moved to Nederland in 1954, which was a very different experience. However, Linda found her place in high school though piano, band, speech contests, participating in plays, National Honor Society, and church at First Baptist, where she played piano for the church through high school. She also began teaching piano lessons to young children. A special honor was being asked to sing at the high school prom and graduation.

Linda had a life-long dream of going to college at Baylor University, which she realized. However, family finances caused her to transfer to Lamar University in Beaumont, where she graduated in 1962 with a degree in Music Education and Piano Performance. While in the music department at Lamar, Linda met Doug Sylva, and they married on May 28, 1962. After a summer of coursework for further certifications, she began teaching in Nederland, Texas, and continued to teach 5th grade in various school districts, while Doug finished college and began his high school band directing career. Linda would accompany Doug’s band students in their contest solos each year. In Dayton, Texas, Linda was selected to attend the Governor’s Council on Children and Youth in the late 1960’s.

In 1970, Linda followed Doug to Spring Branch ISD in the Houston area, where she continued teaching 5th grade music and English at Spring Shadows Elementary, forming the first Children’s Choir in the district. Linda accepted an Assistant Principal’s position in 1973 at Ridgecrest Elementary. A highlight was being the recipient of the President’s Freedom Foundation Award, as well as publishing educational articles. Achieving a grant for a room full of computers was a first for an elementary school in the district, and Linda spent her summers earning a master's degree from Sam Houston University in Huntsville, Texas. When she left Ridgecrest Elementary, Linda was honored when the faculty and students presented her with a handcrafted quilt, whose individual squares were made by every class there.

1978 brought the birth of her precious redheaded, blue-eyed, daughter. Julie was cared for by a school parent, who was an English Nanny, until she was a year old. 1979 brought a career change and move, when Doug became a Kwik Kopy Printing franchise owner, and the family moved to San Angelo, Texas. Linda began teaching at Bowie Elementary and was selected to originate and implement the first San Angelo Gifted and Talented (SAGE) program. In 1982, Linda became principal at Travis Elementary, and supervisor of the SAGE program. While at Travis, she achieved the Texas Blue Bonnet Award for school recognition, Exemplary Status from the state, as well as implementing an innovative curriculum and program of development for children in grades 1-3.

As Linda’s life would have it, she began as the accompanist for Sierra Vista United Methodist Church in 1982. She continued that work long after retiring from SAISD in 1998, and was also hired at Angelo State University as the Student Teacher Supervisor, where she remained for 7 years. In 2010, Linda began teaching piano students in her home. She enjoyed many other activities, such as daily walking through her neighborhood, drawing, writing, and creating projects.

Survivors include: daughter, Julie Sylva; sister, Betty Moody; niece and husband, Jenny and Whit Boyd; nephew and wife, Kevin and Shelly Dowden; 5 great nieces and a nephew, Tiffany, Stephanie Evan, Sarah, Phoebe, Prisca, and Shelby; 2 great nephews, Atticus and Phineas; as well as distant cousins and their families.

The viewing will be at Harper Funeral Home on Thursday, February 6th, from 5-7pm. Linda’s funeral will be at 10am on Friday, February 7th, with graveside to immediately follow, at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Sierra Vista UMC Music Fund.

Larry Arthur Unger

02/03/2025 - 10:56 , by TKing09

Larry Unger, affectionately known as Papa Larry to his grandchildren, passed away peacefully at his home in San Angelo on January 29, 2025, at the age of 77. He was born on October 31, 1947, in San Francisco, California, to Melvin and Jearldean Walker. After his parents' divorce, his mother married John Unger, and Larry, along with his older brother Dennis, adopted the Unger name.

As a child, Larry enjoyed playing baseball, hunting, and fishing. At the age of 17, with his mother's permission, he joined the United States Navy, serving alongside his brother Dennis on the USS Garcia as a Gunner’s Mate. During his time in the Navy, Larry earned his GED. After serving for two years, he returned to Texas and vowed never to leave again.

On May 16, 1969, Larry joined the San Angelo Police Department, where he rose to the rank of Lieutenant.

On May 4, 1991, Larry married the love of his life, Rita Unger, in San Angelo, Texas, and became a father to her son, Kelly Woodard, who would follow in Larry's footsteps as a Texas Peace Officer.

On September 22, 2002, Larry became a grandfather with the birth of his first grandchild, Taylor. Larry was in awe of Taylor, as she shared the birthday of his beloved wife, Rita.

After 34 years serving the citizens of San Angelo, Larry retired from the police department on October 31, 2003, which was also his 56th birthday.

Following his retirement, Larry continued his passion for hunting and fishing. He was not a man who could sit still; if the sun was up, he was always on the move. When he was at home Larry was kept company by his four faithful dogs, Bear, Haley, Skipper, and Tessie.

On October 26, 2011, Larry welcomed the birth of his second grandchild, Tanner. Tanner developed a passion for football and, more recently, baseball—much like his grandfather. Larry loved discussing baseball with Tanner.

In May 2023, Larry was placed on hospice care after a brief stay in the hospital. In his own words, Larry expressed, "If I'm going to die, I'm going to die at home with my wife and dog!" True to his independent spirit, Larry defied expectations and continued to live for another 18 months despite doctors predicting a shorter timeframe.

Larry is survived by his wife of 34 years, Rita; his son, Kelly, and his wife, Tiffany; his grandchildren, Taylor and Tanner; and his beloved fur baby, Tessie.

The family would like to express their gratitude to the team from Concho Heart Hospice: Cindy, Nichole, Christina, Jacque, Vickie, and Shandy, for their care and support during his final days.

Doug became a scuba diver in the late ‘80’s, eventually earning the title of master diver. His dedication to preservation led to him working as a steward for the Texas Historical Commission. In 2021 he was given the James Wood Award for outstanding archaelogical stewardship after 20 years of service. Doug also used his diving expertise to help law enforcement locate drowning victims.

In 1983 Doug and partner Gary Golightly founded Angelo Archives on Warehouse Road. Curtis Andrews, Sr.

01/29/2025 - 14:07 , by TKing09

Curtis Winford Andrews, Sr., 94, of Georgetown, passed away peacefully after battling Parkinson's, on January 24, 2025, surrounded by family.

Curtis was born on March 15, 1930, in San Saba, Texas, to Ross and Ella Andrews, and was the 2nd eldest of 6 children. They lived there until he was 2 years old, then moved to Union Hill in Belton, where his grandparents lived on a ranch. His grandfather gave his mother and daddy a barn, which they made into a home. When he started school, they moved nearby on 10 acres, to a community called Tennessee Valley. They continued to move frequently. From there, the family moved into the city of Belton, then La Grange where his father had a contract on construction, then on to Johnson City. After that they moved to Jarrell, near their farming operation. The Andrews family eventually moved one last time and settled in Georgetown, where Curtis attended Georgetown High School. In 1948, at the age of 18, he entered the Navy. He always wanted to fly, so he maneuvered to get into the Naval Air Squadron. He served until 1955, in both active duty and the Reserves. Curtis farmed and ranched for most of his life. His love for the outdoors also included deer hunting, fishing, gardening and hunting rattlesnakes. Some of his fondest memories were the hunting trips with his dad, brothers, brother-in-law and nephew. These trips involved stories that he enjoyed sharing, up until the end, repeatedly. Curtis worked for the State of Texas, as a Consulting Hydrologist. He retired in March 1988, after 25 years of service. He then went on to work for FEMA as a Disaster Mitigation Specialist, until 2012. He continued farming into his 80's when he finally decided it was time to hang his hat.

He married Wanda Haire on November 18, 1955. Together they had 4 children and raised a loving family. To ensure their children would have a good, Christian education, Curtis served on the school board for Zion Lutheran School in Walburg for many years. The children were all confirmed in the Lutheran faith before starting public high school. Wanda passed away in September of 1987 from cancer. He then married Dorothy Kalmbach McMillan in November 1988.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ross and Ella Andrews; sister, Melba Helms; brother, Don Andrews; first wife, Wanda Haire; and second wife, Dorothy Kalmbach McMillan.

Curtis is survived by his sisters, Linda Wear and Margie Rydell; brother, Rick Andrews and wife Lori; daughter, Terri Rawls and husband Rocky; two sons, Curtis Andrews, Jr. and Craig Andrews and wife Lynn; and daughter, Carolyn McMullin and husband Glenn. six grandsons, Logan, Dakota, and Kerwin Rawls; Corbin and Carson McMullin; and Brock Andrews. seven great grandchildren, Jett, Charli, Rainn, Livvi, Jordan, Cannon, and Aaron Rawls.

Thank you to the Bronte Health and Rehab Center of Bronte, for the loving, comforting care of Curtis during his last years.

He has Risen with Christ. We look forward to seeing you again, and love you so much, Dad. All Glory to God. Rest in Heavenly peace.
