SAN ANGELO, TX — Shortly before 10:30 a.m., the Grape Creek Volunteer Fire Department was called out to Sunflower Lane for reports of a grass fire near the RV park.
When the firefighters arrived, they found an area adjacent to the park on fire. The fire burned 12 acres and threatened nearly 100 structures in the area.
According to Grape Creek VFD Chief Aaron Flint, the fire was moving quickly toward structures so the crews on scene worked on preventing the spread.
The fire required three additional volunteer fire departments to be called to assist including Carlsbad VFD, Quail Valley VFD, and Water Valley VFD. The Texas Forest Service also assisted the volunteers on the scene.
Firefighters spent nearly six hours battling the fire and thanks to their efforts only one shed/storage place was damaged in the fire. Twelve homes were dangerously close to the fire, but volunteers were able to stop the spread.
“We encourage citizens to be aware of wind conditions and humidity conditions even when there is not a burn ban in effect,” said Chief Flint.
The area has seen rekindling and is being monitored by the volunteers. The cause of the fire is still under investigation and Chief Flint could not confirm a specific cause.
As a reminder, the burn ban went into effect in Tom Green County on Tuesday, June 9th at noon.
