FORT McKAVETT, TX — A spokesman for the Texas DPS said his agency was called to assist the Schleicher County Sheriff's Office at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday evening. At a residence on a small patch of rural land in the eastern edge of the county, an armed man had barricaded himself inside following an altercation with his parents, DPS said.
The standoff lasted overnight and into the morning. At just before 10 a.m. Thursday morning, the armed man went "live" on Facebook video, airing his grievances against the many people living in Menard, elected officials, the news media and law enforcement. In the video, the man offered a tour of his property and a view of his weapons and two large stashes of ammunition. Watch portions of the video here.
After around 20 minutes lapsed, the man went back outside and as he aired his grievances, became visibly upset that (he said) the DPS was using his daughter's Facebook messenger account to try to talk to him. At the end of the video, the man said of the law enforcement officers surrounding his property, "Their choice is to leave, or rush." Then the camera appears to have been set down, pointed at the clear blue skies above. In a flash, you saw the armed man at a standing position, aiming his rifle.
DPS stated that a gunfire exchange ensued between the armed subject and DPS. "The subject died as a result of his injuries," DPS stated.
DPS did not name the man, but from earlier reporting, he was identified as Donny Leek. On Friday, DPS released more information on the incident.
