SAN ANGELO, TX — San Angelo police pieced together what happened after they discovered a badly damaged pickup under the Ben Ficklin overpass on the southern part of Loop 306 at the 5200 block of Ben Ficklin Rd. The man who was driving the pickup died. Here is a video of the crash scene.
Police said they weren’t dispatched to the crash scene until 7:45 a.m. and in a press release this evening said the crash likely happened at around 4 a.m. Sunday morning.
Police traffic investigators said that Tyler Grappe, 38, of San Angelo, was driving a pickup truck westbound on Loop 306 and departed the roadway. Grappe collided with the median and a utility pole before coming to a stop on an embankment. Grappe was the sole occupant of the truck, police said.
Justice of the Peace J.P. McGuire pronounced Grappe dead at the scene after police found him still trapped inside the pickup and unresponsive. The truck, that from photos looks like a late model Ford F-150, was partially submerged in water in a drainage ditch, police said.
At the crash scene, it appeared that the truck departed the left side of the roadway, hit a utility pole, and then went down an embankment between the westbound and eastbound lanes. Loop 306 is a four-lane, divided highway at the crash location.
San Angelo police said they have notified the next-of-kin.
