Tonight's Black Moon is First in Years

SAN ANGELO, TX -- Tonight there will be the first "Black" Moon in five years.

On July 31 the moon will be in the new moon phase for the second time this month.

This only happens every few years due to the moon's lunar cycle lining up with final days of certain months. This will be the first time it has happened since March of 2014 and it will not happen again until April of 2022.

Unfortunately during a black moon it is hard to realize it is happening since it will be complete dark but when this happens for two full moons in one month it is called a "Blue Moon. The last blue moon was in May and it's next one will be in August of 2021.

This means that even though the "blue" moon is more visible, the "black" moon is more rare.
