Strange and Unusual Stories in San Angelo

Strange and unusual stories are a custom of many towns and cities across Texas. San Angelo is one of them, and has produced stories that leave many questions unanswered. San Angelo LIVE! compiled a list of some of these stories for our readers.

UFO Sighting on the Isolated Stretch of US Highway 87 around the Carlsbad Area

On February 23, 2012, a lady by the name of Angela and her family came across two bright lights while driving down the highway. Upon further inspection, there was no doubt to them the lights were not stars.

“We noticed two bright, white lights, shaped like a circle. If they weren't so low, I would have passed them off as stars, but they were lower and brighter than stars. I noticed them just hovering in the sky and not moving,” said Angela on oddencounters.com.

After witnessing this, a silver SUV came from a back country road and sped past the observing family. After turning down another road, there were no back lights, or signs that the SUV had kept going down the road, and Angela mentioned that way of travel lead to a dead end three blocks up from there.

"Not even a second later, I looked back and the car was gone," Angela said. No tail lights, or anything.”

After returning home to drop off their children, Angela and her partner returned to the scene where the lights had now vanished completely. Angela said she felt drawn to the light, and had a headache after the event occurred.

Lone Wolf Crossing Bridge

This story begins with a battle that took place with the 9th U.S. Cavalry from Fort Concho fighting a Native American tribe living in the area. The battle lead to the death of Lone Wolf Chief’s son. It is reported that the chief still wonders around the lake trying to find his son.

This could be the reason for the numerous floods that reached San Angelo, and the destruction of the town of Ben Ficklin in 1882, according to the West Texas Paranormal Organization, (WTPO). They use the atmosphere of the cross bridge to train new paranormal investigators, and during one of the training sessions, an investigator saw a glowing orb rise from the river and float towards Glenmore Park. Before this was witnessed, the battery operated equipment died unexpectedly.  

Fort Concho: Officers’ Quarters # 1

Edith (Edie) Grierson was reported to have died in the officer’s barracks shortly after her thirteenth birthday in September 1878. She was the daughter of Alice Kirk Grierson, who married General Grierson, the commander of Fort Concho from 1875 to 1878.

Cory Robinson, member of Fort Concho, gave more insight into the stories surrounding the Grierson family at Fort Concho.

“[Edith] died of a fever in September of 1878, and was buried at the Fort, not at the official cemetery, but right at the edge of the official cemetery," Robinson said.

He mentioned the Fort just received a letter in 2015 that provides evidence that Edith might have been buried in an area near a tree because her parents wanted her to be put to rest near the nature she loved so much.

After the military started removing bodies from the official cemetery, Edith was moved to the Sutler complex, and Dr. Samuel Smith, who knew the Griersons, offered to have her put to rest on his private land at the Fairmount Cemetery in San Angelo.

In the 1950s and 60s, people started witnessing strange and weird occurrences in the officers’ quarters. Most of these accounts have been related to seeing Edith playing in the room she passed away in.

Robinson mentioned he has talked to the man who originally witnessed this account, but stories have been over exaggerated in the past.  

Brave explorers wishing to witness the paranormal settings themselves can rent out a room in the officers’ quarters for the night.

Old Fire Station (200 S Magdalen St)

The old fire station was built in 1928, and now is home to Healthy Families here in San Angelo. The WTOP were called to investigate the building in March 2014 and July 2014, after employees reported some strange activity. According to the WTOP website, radio and lights had been reportedly turning on and off by themselves, and shadows were walking in and out of offices.   

During their investigation, the equipment picked up audio of an old emergency fire call and a staff meeting by the firefighters. A free floating orb kept the investigators' attention for close to 20 minutes, and they also reported seeing a quick orb dash from one of the offices.

WTOP said the experience shows the firefighters of the past are still in service to the community they cared for, even in the afterlife.
