San Angelo Unemployment 2nd-Lowest in Texas

SAN ANGELO, TX — San Angelo posted the second-lowest unemployment rate among Texas metropolitan areas in August at 3.6 percent, as the state added 5,600 jobs last month and 159,400 over the past year, the Texas Workforce Commission reported Friday.

The not-seasonally adjusted rate for the San Angelo metropolitan statistical area, which includes Tom Green County, dropped from 3.8 percent in July to 3.7 percent in August 2025. About 60,000 people were employed, and 2,300 were unemployed in a civilian labor force of 62,200.

Midland had the state’s lowest rate at 3.3 percent. Abilene and Amarillo followed San Angelo at 3.7 percent.

Statewide, Texas’ seasonally adjusted unemployment rate stood at 4.4 percent. Nonfarm employment reached 14,469,300 after the August gain. The annual increase of 159,400 jobs produced a 1.1 percent growth rate, 0.7 percentage points faster than the national rate.

Texas’ civilian labor force grew by 17,100 over the month to 15,932,600 and by 10,900 over the year.

Leisure and hospitality led private-sector gains in August with 4,900 jobs. Professional and business services added 4,500, and manufacturing added 2,200.

“The addition of more than 159,000 jobs over the year reinforces Texas’ status as a premier destination for employers and a source of ample opportunity for Texas workers,” TWC Chairman Joe Esparza said. “The gains we are seeing across service-based and goods-producing industries highlight how Texas is successfully balancing growth across the entire economic spectrum.”

TWC Commissioner Representing Labor Alberto Treviño III said growth across major industries means more opportunities for Texans. Commissioner Representing the Public Brent Connett called the state’s steady employment growth a testament to the workforce and industries, pointing to career and technical education.
