SAN ANGELO, TX — Here's a roundup of high school football highlights from around West Texas in Week 5:
Iraan Tops Reagan County in Overtime Thriller
In a battle of unbeaten teams, the Iraan Braves emerged with a 34-28 overtime win over Reagan County on Friday.
Iraan standout running back Tristan Griffin scored the game-winning touchdown in OT.
The game lived up to its billing and then some as Reagan County scored with one second remaining in regulation to force overtime.
Iraan improved to 5-0 a year after going 4-6. The Braves will be off next week before opening District 4-2A Division II play at home against Eldorado on Oct. 11.
Reagan County fell to 4-1 and will also have a bye next week. The Owls will begin 3-2A Division I play at home against Ozona on Oct. 11.
Reagan County was led by quarterback Jarrett Brown, who threw for 174 yards and a TD on 16-of-22 passing. He also had two interceptions and a fumble.
His twin brother, Kason, who is typically the QB, had nine catches for 115 yards.
Chris Johnson had 16 carries for 100 yards and three TDs. He also led the defense with 10 tackles and an interception.
No stats are available for Iraan.
Robert Lee Wins on Last-Second TD Over Sands
Brenner Sherwood scored on a 2-yard touchdown run with five seconds remaining to lift Robert Lee to a 78-74 win over Sands on Friday.
The back-and-forth game never saw a lead bigger than 13 points.
Robert Lee held a 54-41 lead midway through the third quarter, but then Sands surged ahead with a 74-62 advantage with 6:34 remaining.
Robert Lee scored twice in the final 4:31 to pull off the comeback.
Sherwood threw for 249 yards and four TDs on 16-of-27 passing, and he had 19 carries for 184 yards and three TDs. He also had 11 tackles on defense.
Jaxon Tavarez had eight carries for 62 yards and three TDs, along with six catches for 62 yards and two TDs.
Nick Samaniego had three catches for 83 yards and two TDs.
Robert Lee (3-2) will host Bronte next week in their Coke County rivalry. Sands (3-2) will be off next week before beginning district play at Wilson.
Brady Cruises to Win Against Ingram Moore
Johnny Menefield had another strong all-around performance to lead Brady to a 42-28 win over Ingram Moore.
Menefield had 15 carries for 141 yards and a touchdown, along with 12 tackles and a forced fumble on defense.
Ashton Taylor added 17 carries for 105 yards.
Brady improved to 4-1 and will be off next week before visiting Dublin in its district opener Oct. 11.
Ingram Moore (0-5) will host Universal City Randolph next week.
Ballinger Clipped Late by Stanton
The Ballinger Bearcats nearly had a comeback win but couldn't hang on in a 25-21 loss to Stanton.
After falling behind 18-6 in the second quarter, Ballinger rallied back with a pair of touchdown runs by Aiden Pena to take a 21-18 lead with about four minutes to play.
Stanton responded, however, and regained the lead with about a minute remaining on a TD run by quarterback Jake Benedict.
Ballinger (3-2) will be off next week before opening district play at Bangs on Oct. 11. Stanton (3-2) has two upcoming open dates before hosting Grape Creek in its district opener Oct. 18.
Eldorado Earns Win Over Harper
Jasi Galindo had three long touchdowns to lead Eldorado to a 30-13 win over Harper.
Galindo caught a 70-yard TD pass from Jonnie Rae Adame, and he added TD runs of 25 and 35 yards to help Eldorado pull away from a 10-7 lead at halftime.
Adame also threw a 30-yard TD pass to Jonah Penkszyk.
Brason Brock added a 40-yard field goal.
Eldorado (2-3) will be off next week before opening district play at Iraan on Oct. 11. Harper (3-2) will also be off next week before playing at Holland on Oct. 11.
Water Valley Impresses Again in Rout of Rochelle
A week after losing by two points to state-ranked Buena Vista, Water Valley earned a 73-28 win over previously state-ranked Rochelle.
The Wildcats were expected to be immediate contenders in their return to the six-man ranks this season, and they certainly look the part so far.
Anthony Quintana had 13 carries for 164 yards and two TDs, and he had three catches for 51 yards and a TD.
Landon Lacy threw for 128 yards and five TDs on 8-of-15 passing. He also had 10 carries for 68 yards and two TDs.
Boston Wiese had eight carries for 46 yards and two TDs.
Water Valley (3-2) will visit Rankin next week in its final nondistrict game. The Wildcats will open district play at home against Veribest on Oct. 18.
Veribest Rolls to Another Big Win
The Veribest Falcons won their fourth straight game by the 45-point mercy rule with a 68-22 win over Medina.
Veribest dropped its first game of the season 29-27 to state-ranked Zephyr, and the Falcons have been running wild ever since.
Veribest (4-1) will host Nueces Canyon next week in its final nondistrict game. The Falcons will then begin district play at home against Paint Rock on Oct. 11.
Medina (1-3) will host San Antonio Sunnybrook next week.
