SAN ANGELO, TX — The demolition process is underway today at the historic main building of San Jacinto Elementary, more than a year after structural damage forced the school’s closure.
Crews were seen carrying out furniture and equipment, including desks and chairs, ahead of work to tear down the 116-year-old building. Heavy machinery is staged on-site as part of the removal process approved by the San Angelo ISD Board of Trustees earlier this summer.
The district voted in January to permanently close San Jacinto, citing safety and structural concerns following a July 2024 earthquake that worsened existing damage. Students were relocated to Reagan Elementary for the 2024–25 school year.
In July, trustees approved a $453,800 contract for demolition at both San Jacinto and Austin Elementary, which was vacated after a merger with McGill Elementary.
Superintendent Dr. Christopher Moran previously said the building had reached “the end of life” and that removing it was necessary to protect safety and prevent further deterioration.
San Jacinto’s closure and demolition mark the end of a campus that had served generations of San Angelo students since the early 1900s.
