SAN ANGELO, TX – Bishop Joe S. Vásquez, who was ordained as a priest in San Angelo in 1984, has been appointed by Pope Francis as the new Archbishop of Galveston-Houston. Vásquez succeeds Cardinal Daniel N. DiNardo, who retired after leading the Texas archdiocese since 2006.
Vásquez, 67, served as the Bishop of Austin since 2010 and was also the apostolic administrator for the Diocese of Tyler from 2023 to 2024. He will now oversee the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston, which serves over 2 million Catholics across 8,880 square miles.
A native of Stamford, Texas, Vásquez began his ministry in the Diocese of San Angelo, where he served at St. Joseph Parish in Odessa and Fort Stockton. His episcopal motto was “Sígueme” or “Follow me.”
His installation as the ninth archbishop of Galveston-Houston is set for March 25 at the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart in Houston. Vásquez is one of 26 active Hispanic Catholic bishops in the U.S.
Cardinal DiNardo, who turned 75 in 2024, submitted his resignation as required by canon law. He led the archdiocese for nearly two decades, during which it became one of the largest in the country.
The Galveston-Houston Archdiocese became a metropolitan archdiocese in 2004.
