Smoke from Yard Fire Covers Downtown Skies Sunday Morning

SAN ANGELO, TX — At around 11:30 a.m., a passer by driving down Oakes St. near the 5th Street intersection called 9-1-1. “There’s explosions, fire, and lots of smoke,” he told dispatchers.

The San Angelo Fire Department responded quickly and spent around 20 minutes knocking down what was at first thought to be a dumpster fire but after the smoke cleared, looked like a large quantity of trash in a lot next to the Final Finish Collision Center had caught fire. The fire was out before 11:50 a.m. and firefighters stayed a while to knock out any hot spots to prevent the fire from reigniting.

WATCH:

The Fire Marshal’s office is investigating the cause. It did not appear any structures were involved significantly, although from looking at the photos, it appeared an exterior wall of the body shop was impacted by the smoke, flames and heat. The eves of the roofs on the buildings on both sides started to catch fire but the firefighters quickly doused the roofs with water preventing significant damage.

When you saw the large amount of smoke this morning, this is what it was.

Ladder 1 and crew from Station 1 in downtown responded.
