SAN ANGELO, TX — The young woman who allegedly killed a pedestrian with a vehicle has been indicted.
Andrea Mendoza, 19, of San Angelo, has been indicted by a Tom Green County grand jury for Accident Involving Death after she allegedly hit and killed James Dwyer on North Chadbourne Street with her vehicle.
According to court documents, on August 4, 2024, a call for service dispatched officers to the intersection of 32nd Street and North Chadbourne Street regarding a subject down. There, the investigator learned that an officer located the victim, 53-year-old James Dwyer Jr., on the west side of the roadway.
The investigator was advised that Dwyer Jr. was in extreme need of medical treatment. The officer said that tourniquets were applied to Dwyer Jr. who, at the time, had a weak pulse.
Medics arrived on the scene and began treating Dwyer Jr., but he succumbed to his injuries and passed away.
On scene, the investigator spoke to four complainants who said they observed Dwyer Jr. on the ground and not moving so they called 911 for emergency services. The four individuals did not see the accident take place as they arrived after.
A suspect vehicle, a white Mercury Sable with the license plate number TTH9269, was left close to the scene at 31st Street and North Chadbourne Street. The registered owner of the suspect vehicle was Mendoza. The investigator advised patrol officers to go to the listed address for Mendoza and attempt to contact the residents.
The scene of the crash stretched approximately one block, and the vehicle involved had blood and a dent in the hood and on the roof. The passenger side windshield was broken and hanging on the inside of the vehicle.
At Mendoza’s listed address, a detective spoke with her grandmother who said she was called to pick up Mendoza and Krystal Robles at the Shell gas station located at 2902 North Bryant Boulevard.
Mendoza allegedly admitted to driving the vehicle that struck and killed Dwyer Jr. before she left the scene of the accident. The detective then said that Mendoza’s grandmother attempted to take her and Robles back to the scene of the accident but they both fled from the vehicle.
Investigators were later told that Robles was calling dispatch about Mendoza allegedly committing the hit-and-run accident. The detective went to speak with Robles who stated Mendoza was operating the vehicle and did strike Dwyer Jr. before they both fled the scene.
Mendoza was arrested on August 4, 2024, and was released on August 10, 2024, on $75,000 bond. She is next due in court on December 3, 2024, and has a jury trial currently scheduled for April 21, 2025.
