Shooting Suspect Arrested in Abilene Awaiting Extradition to San Angelo

Abilene Police have arrested 32-year-old Pete “Oso” Frank Estrada, the suspect in the shooting on Ave. O in San Angelo on Nov. 30, KTXS confirmed this evening.

The shooting happened just before 9:30 p.m. the night of Nov. 30 and one victim received a gunshot wound to the shoulder before the suspect fled with the victim’s Chevrolet S10 pickup.

KTXS reported that APD is working on extradition of Estrada back to San Angelo.

San Angelo Police Department Detective Adrian Castro said Abilene Police Street Crimes Division has been working closely with SAPD to identify and arrest the suspect.

Castro said that Estrada’s identity was developed through the course of his investigation and a warrant for his arrest was made Dec. 2 through Tom Green County Justice of the Peace Eddie Howard.

“As soon as the warrant was publicized, Estrada disappeared,” Castro said.

Castro said citizens reporting his whereabouts through Crime Stoppers were very helpful. “We were receiving tips from all over San Angelo.” But then, the tips began coming from north of San Angelo, in Coke County and then Abilene.

In addition to the Crime Stoppers announcement, Castro used inter-agency communications channels to warn area law enforcement about the danger the suspect posed. He was considered armed and dangerous.

“We got an immediate response from the Abilene Police Department’s Street Crimes Division,” Castro said. “They wanted to help.”

Abilene and San Angelo PD worked separately on the case but were in constant contact. Both agencies thought Estrada was in Taylor County.

Abilene PD found and arrested Estrada this afternoon.

KTXS reported this evening that Abilene PD is handing Estrada off to San Angelo police detectives tonight. He will be booked in the Tom Green County Jail after he is transported here.

Castro said that SAPD has a strong working relationship with Abilene Police Department and this is one of many cases the two agencies have worked on together. “It happened to be Abilene that had the suspect, and got him off the streets this time,” Castro said.

Public Information Officer Tracy Gonzalez said Dec. 2 that investigators developed probable cause naming Estrada as the suspect who shot a 31-year-old San Angelo man and stole a red 1991 Chevrolet S10 pickup truck the victim had been operating on Nov. 30.  The vehicle has since been recovered, and was located unoccupied in the 1500 block of Preusser Street.

"Estrada is wanted for Aggravated Robbery, a First Degree Felony," said Gonzalez.

Update: December 12 @ 11:59 a.m.

ABILENE, TX – A press release from the San Angelo Police Department today re-confirmed that the Abilene Police Department’s Street Crimes Division captured a San Angelo shooting suspect yesterday afternoon.

The Abilene’s Street Crime Division captured shooting suspect Pete “Oso” Frank Estrada, 32, wanted in connection with an Aggravated Robbery on Avenue O that occurred on November 30. Estrada is accused of shooting a 31-year-old man as well as fleeing in the victim’s truck.

Subsequently, detectives sent out a regional message to law enforcement agencies to be on alert for the stolen truck, as well as a description of the armed suspect whom SAPD believed to be Pete Frank Estrada. Soon after, the Abilene Department responded with corroborating information and offered to help SAPD.

Justice of the Peace Judge Eddie Howard issued an Arrest Warrant for Estrada for the charge of Aggravated Robbery on December 2. Crime Stoppers of San Angelo also aided by releasing a bulletin offering a reward for information leading to Estrada’s arrest.

Throughout the investigation, SAPD and the APSCD worked closely to develop leads and follow up on San Angelo and Abilene Crime Stoppers tips. This, SAPD believes, led to the successful capture of Estrada.

Estrada is currently awaiting extradition to San Angelo.
