Speed Limit Lowered on U.S. 67 from San Angelo to Big Lake

The Texas Department of Transportation is lowering the speed limit on US 67 from 75 mph to 70 mph between San Angelo and Big Lake effective today. This stretch of highway, especially between Big Lake and Barnhart, has seen an increase in crash rates in the last two years. It now ranks higher than the state average for crashes for a similar type rural road.

A project to add three passing lanes between Big Lake and Irion County line was awarded to Reece Albert, Inc. in August and is expected to begin construction later this year. This $5 million dollar improvement will add three one-mile passing lanes along the 11 mile stretch.

Another project, expected to go out for bids in June of 2015 will add passing lanes along US 67 in Irion County. This project has a preliminary cost estimate of $27 million.

You could make it 50 but that does not change the fact that traffic has increased exponentially and that congestion is the main issue. When you go from a few dozen cars an hour 3 years ago to thousands of cars an hour traveling that highway, you are going to have problems.

No doubt about congestion on our highways. The prime reason, in my opinion, why speed should be reduced

The only thing this will accomplish is that there will be many more people speeding. They will be driving the same speed as always, but now it will be above the speed limit
Ok, I like that but the real problem is that these people are driving in their sleep! Many of the wrecks are being caused by fatigued oil fiels workers trying to drive when they are too tired. Mix a few beers of controlled substance to that and bam!
