SAN ANGELO, TX – With the first day of school beginning Thursday, the San Angelo Police Department reminded the public about ways to keep children safe this year.
In the modern era of schools, there are a number of things to worry about as parents. Despite all the worries, the police have a way of handling school incidents.
"As the school year is about to start, we want to encourage parents and students to remember the saying we use: 'If you hear something, see something, say something.' They can always reach out to us through our non-emergency dispatch number at (325)657-4315 or send us a Facebook message for anything they want us to be aware of," stated Officer Kelsey Hernandez with the San Angelo Police Department. "This helps us provide extra patrol if needed at schools for any potential threats or concerns."
This is a way to report any ongoing or potential crime on campus. Another issue parents need to be conscious of is of course driving, especially in school zones.
"Slow down in school zones and crosswalks. There will be a lot of traffic, and parents and students need to give themselves enough time to make it safely to school," continued Hernandez. "Most accidents really do happen close to home. Safety belts are the best protection for passengers in a crash, and car seats need to be properly secured to work."
Classes begin for San Angelo ISD on Aug. 17, 2023. For more on the first day see the following story: Ready or Not, 1st Day of School is Thursday!
