Two Horses Die After Leaving Local Bar

Two horses were fatally injured in a car crash Saturday night after leaving a north San Angelo bar.

At just after 10 p.m., Anthony Yanis was heading east in the 1400 block of Hughes St., when two horses, running west in the center of the road, appeared in his headlights.

Perhaps paralyzed by the obscurity of the sight, or perhaps unable to react quickly enough, Yanis struck the horses with his 2001 Chevy Silverado, fatally injuring one of the animals, which died almost immediately thereafter. 

When Gregorio Ponce, the owner of the animals arrived on scene, he stated he’d tied the horses up at a bar on Hughes St., but that they had somehow gotten loose. Presumably, he wanted to avoid getting a DWI that night and had ridden the horses to the bar with an accomplice.

Animal control was called to the scene to tend to the second horse, which was also injured in the crash. The horse had to be put down due to the severity of the injuries.

According to the accident report, Yanis refused an ambulance. Whether or not he sustained any injuries as a result of the crash is not listed.

The speed limit on Hughes St. is 35 mph.
