SAN ANGELO, TX -- Around 2:30 p.m. this afternoon, San Angelo Police responded to the Shannon Medical Plaza on 102 N. Magdalen for reports of a major crash involving a vehicle and a structure.
A LIVE! reporter on the scene said one pedestrian was harmed as a result of the crash and they were taken to Shannon hospital.
The vehicle is a white Ford F-350. Police have taped off the area of where the crash occurred.
LIVE! will provide an update when more information becomes available.
Update 3:30 p.m.
Tracy Gonzalez, Public Information Officer for San Angelo Police Department, said at approximately 2:15 p.m. that officers were dispatched to Shannon Clinic at 102 N. Magdalen for reports of a vehicle crash involving a Ford F-350 Super Duty and a pedestrian.
Gonzalez stated the victim is an employee of Scherz landscaping company and he was working on the Shannon parking lot when he was struck by the pickup truck.
The victim is a 56-year-old man, and he was transported to Shannon Medical Center by ambulance where he underwent "immediate surgery for his injuries," Gonzalez said. Gonzalez added that the injuries were considered incapacitating.
The driver of the pickup is 70 years old and he was "visably shaken after the crash, [but] was not injured," Gonzalez said.
The driver told police his truck experienced a mechanical issue just prior to the crash.
"After he collided with the pedestrian the truck continued to travel where it came to rest after striking a brick-covered pillar at the clinic sally port," Gonzalez stated.
The pillar received significant interior damage from the crash. Structural engineers were called out to secure the pillar to make sure everything was safe, Gonzalez said.
"The clinic is open and taking patients," Gonzalez added. "However, the south side entrance of the clinic has been closed to patients."
She said those patients will be redirected to the north entrance of the clinic.
Several witnesses told police the truck was traveling at a "very high rate of speed," and that the truck entered the parking lot from the N. Magdalen entrance and barreled across the parking lot, Gonzalez stated.
No citations will be issued until further investigation takes place, Gonzalez added. Investigators taped off the area so they can take accurate measurements and gather all the necessary information.
Due to the accident involving a pedestrian and producing significant property damage, the crash is reportable to the Texas Department of Transportation despite it taking place on private property, Gonzalez stated.

"The driver of the pickup is 70 years old"
You don't even have to read the article to figure these crashes out. How many more people have to die or get maimed before we start requiring the elderly to go through mandatory competency tests to drive?

PermalinkYes, older people are involved in accidents but here are the statistics or the truth.
The risk of motor vehicle crashes are higher among 16-19-year-olds than among any other age group. In fact, per mile driven, teen drivers ages 16 to 19 are nearly three times more likely than drivers aged 20 and older to be in a fatal crash.May 12, 2017

Don't even have to read the article to know that based off this scene. When will the elderly be held accountable for their driving? Every week I see some person over the age of 70 cause a near accident. We need cognitive tests yearly to drive after age 65. How many more people will be maimed or killed before then?

PermalinkThe circumstances sound like another case of "pedal misapplication" where the driver mistakenly presses on the accelerator thinking it is the brake. It happens so fast that drivers with slow reaction times are startled and think something went mechanically wrong so they press harder on the accelerator trying to stop the vehicle.

PermalinkSad to hear that yet another OLD person who shouldn't even be driving, gets behind a steering wheel and then becomes confused with the operating controls of a vehicle and causes thousands of dollars worth of damage along with life changing injuries to a completely innocent, hard working person......
