Ruth Vernell Scruggs Scott

Ruth Vernell Scruggs Scott, passed away peacefully on March 24, 2021 at the age of 88. She was born November 19, 1932 to Charles and Mamie Ann Carroll on a farm in Sweetwater, Texas. The Carroll family moved to San Angelo in 1941 and Vernell graduated from Lake View High School in 1950. 
Vernell met the love of her life James (Jim) T. Scruggs while he was stationed at Goodfellow AFB. They married in October, 1950 and together they had three children. She loved being a military wife and hosted many young military families in her home. They were stationed in several states before returning to San Angelo in 1969. Ruth worked for GTE and retired after 22 years. After retirement from GTE, she obtained her real estate license and enjoyed selling real estate for several years. 
Jim and Vernell celebrated 47 years of marriage before Jim passed away in 1997. In 1999, Ruth met and married her second love Ellis Wayne Scott. Ruth and Wayne literally traveled the world that took them to many wonderful and exciting countries. Wayne passed away in June 2011 after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer.  
Ruth Vernell was preceded in death by her parents, first husband Jim Scruggs, second husband Wayne Scott, her brother Ray Carroll, sister Ann Culbreth and many wonderful friends.  
She is survived by her children, Ruth Ann Wheeler (Mike) of San Angelo, Robbie Scruggs (Vivian) of The Shores, Corsicana, and Regina Ross (Oren) of Trophy Club, TX. Her five grandchildren Jarret Scruggs (Lauren) of Coppell, TX, Hunter Scruggs (Brittany) of Denton, Texas, Crystal Campbell (Andy) of Southlake, TX, Chris Ross (Sara) of Dallas, TX and Kami Jones (James) of Watervalley, TX. And her great-grandchildren, Jaxon and Addison Scruggs; Clark, Henry and Gigi Campbell, one on the way, Maverick Jones and two step-great grandchildren Kyle and Logan Jones. Also, several nieces and nephews. 
Family meant the world to Ruth. She always said she was blessed with a wonderful family and we all said we were blessed with a wonderful mom, mother-in-law, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Ruth was a faithful member of Glen Meadows Baptist Church.
Special thanks to the staff at Lyndale where she lived for four years and to her special caregiver Hope Guzman and also special thanks to the staff at Sagecrest Memory Care Center for their loving care of our mom and Hospice of San Angelo. 
Family visitation with be Friday, March 26th from 4 p.m. to 6 pm at Harper Funeral Home. The Funeral Service will be 10:00 A.M., March 27th at Harper Funeral Home with Pastor Mack Roller officiating. Burial will follow at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to Wounded Warrior Project, Glen Meadows Baptist Church or to your favorite charity.
