Joy Boyd

01/29/2021 - 12:09 , by TKing09

Leta Joy Culp, born at home on October 18, 1932 in Lamesa, was the daughter of Ethel Strickland and Bonnie Culp, who along with her younger brother, Ronnie, preceded her in death. Joy married Hal Boyd on May 16, 1951 in Lamesa and they were together for 63 years before his passing in 2014.
Joy was a star basketball player in Sparenburg, in Lamesa for the Golden Tornadoes where she graduated from high school, and for a short while at McMurry College in Abilene. She was a member of 48 Delphians, Eastern Star and modeled for Collins’ Department Store in Lamesa.
Her banking career began in 1952 working as a bookkeeper for 1st National Bank which continued at Lamesa National Bank concluding her career there as Vice President in 1974 when they moved to Big Spring. She ended her banking career while working for State National Bank as Vice President totaling her lending experience to about 40 years.
She wanted to do something more fun, so when the opportunity arose, Joy left banking to own a Hallmark Store in Big Spring. She loved to shop and decorate and thrived greeting the public, a talent which she had long passed on to her son, Mike. No mother loved her son more! Upon moving to San Angelo in 1997 to be closer to family, Joy continued her Hallmark business until she retired in 2002.
Joy volunteered for Shannon Hospital working in the gift shop as a member of the Auxiliary for over twelve years.
She was a faithful 12th MAN and Honorary Aggie, and loved to watch the Cowboys!
Joy is survived by her only son, Mike Boyd, and wife, Treva; grandson, Michael Keesey Boyd MD, and wife, Richele; and grandson, Jordan Boyd and Desiree of Austin. She had four phenomenal great grandsons who loved her awesome 7-Up Pound Cake…Tryston, Ethan, Jameson, and Jackson.
Joy passed away on January 26 at the wonderful age of 88! The family wants to thank the staff at Lyndale Court and the Shannon Covid Unit on 6-South for their compassionate care.
A private family graveside service will be held in Lamesa, Texas
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Garden of Hope at the Shannon Hospital Oncology Unit.
