PECOS, TX — The death toll from the train derailment that struck the Pecos Chamber of Commerce building has risen to two, officials announced during a press conference this morning.
Two Union Pacific employees are confirmed dead, and three others were injured after a freight train collided with a tractor-trailer and derailed in Pecos on Wednesday evening. One victim was taken to Odessa for treatment, and the other two were treated at the scene.
The derailment occurred around 5 p.m. near Oak Street and Dot Stafford Street, according to city officials. Emergency crews have confirmed that two train cars carrying hazardous materials, including lithium-ion batteries, are secure, with no leaks reported.
Diesel fuel from the derailment has also been contained.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has launched an investigation into the incident.
