18-Year-Old Ejected and Killed in Eddy County Crash

CARLSBAD, N.M. – An 18-year-old driver was killed early Wednesday after being ejected from his vehicle in a rollover crash on Hidalgo Rural Road, according to the Eddy County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash, reported at 2:15 a.m., occurred as Jiovanni Melendrez was driving southbound toward Dark Canyon Road. Investigators determined that Melendrez lost control of the vehicle, veering off the roadway onto the northbound shoulder, causing it to overturn.

Melendrez was ejected from the vehicle and pronounced deceased at the scene.

Deputies confirmed that alcohol and excessive speed contributed to the fatal crash.

The crash remains under investigation, and no further information has been released.
