Man Dies in Fiery Crash at Callahan County Rest Area

CALLAHAN COUNTY, TX - A 31-year-old Dallas man died early Friday in a fiery crash at a rest area along eastbound Interstate 20 in Callahan County, Texas, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Samuel Angel Vargas was pronounced deceased at the scene after his 2007 Honda Civic collided with the rear of a legally parked commercial truck tractor towing a semi-trailer around 2:30 a.m. Feb. 27 at the rest area near the 297-mile marker, DPS reported.

The Honda exited the interstate into the rest area and struck the parked truck. The impact ejected Vargas from the car, which then caught fire and burned. No seat belt use was indicated in the preliminary report.

The two occupants of the parked commercial vehicle were asleep inside at the time and were uninjured.

No other injuries were reported, and the weather was clear with dry road conditions. The posted speed limit in the area is 75 mph.

The investigation continues.
