Friday Night Football Roundup: Christoval Earns First Win, Water Valley Edged by No. 10 Buena Vista

 

Here's a roundup of high school football highlights from around West Texas in Week 4:

Christoval Shuts Out Sterling City for First Win

STERLING CITY, TX — The Christoval Cougars earned their first win of the season Friday with a 29-0 shutout of Sterling City.

Christoval’s offense had its best showing of the year, while the defense remained strong, led by a three-interception performance from Tristan Alvarado.

The Cougars haven’t allowed more than 21 points in any of their four games.

Manuel Riojas led Christoval's offense with 19 carries for 123 yards and a touchdown. Stanton McGlothlin added 16 carries for 73 yards and a TD.

Christoval (1-3) will host Mason next week, while Sterling City will visit Cross Plains.

Water Valley Edged by No. 10 Buena Vista

The Water Valley Wildcats had an impressive showing Friday in a 54-52 shootout loss to No. 10-ranked Buena Vista.

Anthony Quintana had two interceptions and a fumble recovery to lead the Wildcats on defense. He also had four catches for 68 yards and a TD and nine carries for 45 yards and a TD.

Landon Lacy was 10-of-17 passing for 172 yards and three TDs, and he added 54 yards and two TDs on the ground.

Boston Wiese had 12 carries for 70 yards and a TD, along with 18 tackles on defense. Gunnar Brooks had four catches for 79 yards and a TD.

Water Valley fell to 2-2, while Buena Vista improved to 4-0.

Water Valley will visit Rochelle next week. Buena Vista will host Westbrook.

Robert Lee Rolls Past Blackwell

The Robert Lee Steers raced to a 76-24 win over Blackwell in a game that ended at halftime due to the 45-point mercy rule.

Brenner Sherwood had 10 carries for 184 rushing yards and three TDs. He was also 8-of-10 passing for 80 yards and two TDs.

Jaxon Tavarez had three rushing touchdowns and returned an interception for a score.

Robert Lee (2-2) will play at Sands next week, while Blackwell (0-4) will visit Highland.

Mason Pulls Away in Second Half Against Junction

The Mason Punchers defeated the rival Junction Eagles for the 19th straight time in their series with a 35-12 win.

Mason only led 14-6 at halftime, but the Punchers put the game away in the third quarter to take a 28-6 lead.

The Punchers were led by running back Sutten Silerio, who had 15 carries for 198 yards and two TDs.

Quarterback Carlton Schmidt had 13 carries for 70 yards and a TD.

Mason (3-1), ranked No. 10 in Class 2A Division I, will visit Christoval next week.

Junction (3-1) will be off next week before beginning district play Oct. 4 at home against Rocksprings.

Veribest Continues Strong Start With Win Over Baird

The Veribest Falcons won their third straight game with a 75-30 win over previously unbeaten Baird.

Veribest’s only loss this year was a 29-27 setback against a Zephyr team now ranked in the top 10 in the state in Class 1A Division II.

Veribest (3-1) will visit Medina next week, while Baird (3-1) will host Roby.

Irion County Holds Off Garden City

The Irion County Hornets went on the road and earned a 44-40 win over Garden City.

It's the second consecutive week Irion County has survived a close finish following a 52-50 victory over  Midland Holy Cross last week.

Garden City was led by Brody Walts, who had 13 carries for 92 yards and a TD, along with four catches for 112 yards and three TDs.

Garden City's Presley Jost was 14-of-16 passing for 162 yards and four TDs.

No stats are available yet for Irion County.

Garden City (2-2) will visit Midland Trinity next week. Irion County (2-2) will host Klondike next week.
