San Angelo Man Indicted for Intoxication Assault After Crash

SAN ANGELO, TX — A San Angelo man was indicted for intoxication assault with a vehicle after crashing into a couple and injuring them.

Zachary Clark, 32, has been indicted by a Tom Green County grand jury on two counts of intoxication assault with a vehicle causing serious bodily injury.

According to court documents, on November 18, 2023, at 11:18 p.m., an officer heard a loud noise behind him as he was traveling south on South Bryant Boulevard. In his rearview mirror, the officer observed a vehicle at the intersection of South Bryant and South Jackson that looked as if it was involved in a crash.

Then, the officer witnessed a truck pass him at a high rate of speed and jump a curb before coming to a stop in a field south of the intersection of South Bryant and Permian Drive. He went up to the vehicle and observed the sole occupant, Clark, in the driver’s seat.

Clark was bleeding from his head and had slurred speech but stated that he had a stuttering problem. He had heavy feet and walked slowly but did have a head injury. The officer smelled a slight odor of alcohol coming from Clark as well. He allegedly said that he had two tall "Crown and Waters" and drank the last one about half an hour before the crash.

Clark stated that the crash happened because he saw brake lights out of nowhere. The victims, in the vehicle behind the officer, never braked as there was a green light, and were traveling at around 50 mph. Clark’s truck had damage to the front left side and the victim’s vehicle had damage on the right side indicating that Clark had left his lane of travel and crashed into the victim.

Field sobriety tests were not performed on Clark due to him having to go to the hospital for his head injury, but Clark did not have normal use of mental or physical faculties by reason of the introduction of alcohol into his body.

One of the victims suffered from a fractured bone in his back and the other suffered from a c-spine fracture.

Clark was arrested on November 19, 2023, and was released the same day. He is next due in court on August 14, 2024.
