Gas Prices Falling as Summer Driving Season Gets Underway

SAN ANGELO, TX  — Gas prices in Texas have seen a slight decrease over the past month, according to the latest data from AAA. 

The current average price for regular unleaded gasoline in Texas is $2.97, down from $3.22 a month ago. This marks a notable reduction compared to the same period last year when the average was $3.15.

San Angelo reports a current average of $2.80 for regular unleaded gasoline, also down from $3.03 a month ago and $2.95 a year ago. 

Amarillo boasts the cheapest gas prices in the state, with an average of $2.77, a decrease from $3.059 last month and $3.22 a year ago. In contrast, El Paso has the most expensive gas in Texas, with a current average of $3.22, compared to $3.19 last month and $3.45 last year.

The highest recorded average price for regular unleaded gasoline in Texas was $4.69, reported on June 15, 2022.

Crude oil prices have fallen since the start of June. At the time of this release, West Texas Intermediate was trading at $73 per barrel. That’s down from $79 at the end of May. Crude oil is the main ingredient in gasoline and makes up 50-60 percent of the cost of each gallon of fuel.

“Texans are seeing savings at the pump, which is good news for those taking a summer road trip,” said AAA Texas spokesperson, Daniel Armbruster. “If crude oil prices continue to move lower, drivers could see more savings at the pump through June.”
