ABILENE, TX — The Abilene Zoo has euthanized Kito, a male giraffe who had been a beloved resident for more than a decade, after his health declined rapidly in recent days despite months of intensive care.
Zoo officials announced Kito’s death on Wednesday, saying animal care and veterinary teams made the difficult decision to humanely euthanize him following a careful evaluation of his quality of life. Kito had been receiving extensive treatment for a chronic neck condition, including regular veterinary evaluations and medication, chiropractic visits, light therapy and a specialized therapeutic blanket designed to improve circulation and support recovery.
In his final days, Kito stopped eating and showed signs that his quality of life had deteriorated beyond an acceptable level, zoo officials said.
“It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Kito this morning,” the zoo stated. “This is never an easy decision. It is one of the hardest responsibilities we have as animal care professionals, but our commitment is always to the welfare of the animals in our care.”
Kito had been part of the Abilene Zoo family since shortly after his birth in 2015. He touched the lives of countless visitors and was deeply loved by keepers, veterinary staff, guest services employees and the community.
The zoo said it is mourning the loss of a cherished member of its family and expressed gratitude for the support, kind messages and encouragement from the public throughout Kito’s health journey.
