SAN ANGELO – A line of severe thunderstorms rattled West Central Texas early Sunday morning dumping three tenths of an inch of rain at Mathis Field and flooding area streets ahead of a cold front that is forecast to dump snow in the northern Big Country on Super Bowl Sunday.
The National Weather Service office in San Angelo issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning as a severe storm cell reached the San Angelo area. San Angelo Police issued a Nixle alert: "US-67 near Irion-Tom Green line moving East at 35 mph. A severe thunderstorm has been indicated by weather radar. Hail of at least 1 in diameter and/or winds in excess of 58 mph are possible with this storm. Seek Shelter"
The storm system dumped three tenths of an inch at the airport between midnight and 3 a.m.
The forecast calls for a cold and windy Super Bowl Sunday and a very cold Sunday night with the possibility of snow accumulations north of Abilene.
In the Big Country, a blend of rain and snow could occur throughout the afternoon and evening hours. Some areas in the northern Big Country may experience snow accumulation ranging from 1 to 2 inches. As temperatures dip just below freezing overnight, roads in this region may become slippery.
In the Concho Valley, look for a high temperature Sunday around noon of 48 degrees then steadily falling to 41 degrees. It'll be windy with gusty northwest winds at 10 to 15 mph with gusts to 25 mph.
