HOUSTON, TX — A house fire in Houston's North Side claimed the lives of 31-year-old Giovanna Cabrera and her 1-year-old son, Gabriel, in the early hours of Saturday morning.
The fire erupted around 4:30 a.m. at their residence on Heaney Drive near Bauman Road. Cabrera heroically rescued her two older children, aged 6 and 9, before re-entering the engulfed home to save the youngest, Gabriel.
Houston firefighters faced challenges accessing the home due to the intense flames. Despite their efforts, Cabrera and Gabriel were found deceased inside the house.
Cabrera's sister, Giselle Bueno, recounted the tragedy, expressing gratitude that Giovanna and her son passed away together. She emphasized Cabrera's bravery and motherly instincts, noting that if there was a chance for escape, Cabrera would have taken it.
A neighbor, alerted by the children seeking help, described hearing Spanish cries through the mail slot. When she reached the door, she witnessed the children running shoeless, and the house across the street ablaze.
The fire's intensity made it difficult to determine the home's structure immediately, whether one or two stories.
In the wake of the tragedy, Pastor Jaime Garcia from Bethel Baptist Church rallied congregants and community members to support the grieving family. A GoFundMe page has been established to assist with funeral expenses and provide aid to Cabrera's surviving children. The outpouring of support, including clothing, food, money, and gifts, has offered solace to the bereaved family during this challenging time.
The circumstances of the fire and the events leading up to it remain under investigation.
