HOUSTON, TX — With the end of the MLB’s regular season approaching, Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale is back at it again. The Houston Astros are making one final playoff push, and Mattress Mack has enough faith to put another big bet on the ‘Stros this season. On September 15, McInvale paced a $1.9 million bet on top of the $2 million bet he made prior to the start of the season for the Astros to win it all again in 2023.
McIngvale currently risks $3.9 million with a shot at $23.4 million in potential winnings if the Astros can pull off another World Series win this year. Mack is known for outrageous bets tied to promotions for his furniture company in the Houston area. This year, customers who bought $3,000 or more will have their entire purchase refunded if Houston wins the World Series. McIngvale uses these crazy bets to balance out the promotions that he puts on. If he wins his bets, he pays out some of his winnings to the customers who bought merchandise from his shop. If the Astros and Mack lose, then he keeps the money spent at his store to cover his losses.
Last season, after the Astros won the World Series, Mattress Mack collected $75 million in total winnings after Houston won the World Series in 2022.
The Houston Astros fell out of 1st place in the AL West last week after an abysmal showing against the Baltimore Orioles and Kansas City Royals. Houston is 3-7 in its last ten games and, at this point, is lucky to even hold on to the final Wild Card spot in the AL playoffs. While the Astros aren’t out of it yet, at 3.5 games behind the rival Texas Rangers, Houston needs to pick it up.
The Astros play the Seattle Mariners in Seattle on Wednesday night, September 27. First pitch is scheduled for 7:40 p.m.
