LAS VEGAS, NV — San Angelo tie-down roper Joel Harris continued his incredible run at the National Finals Rodeo on Wednesday, winning a round for the second consecutive night.
Harris roped his calf in 7.5 seconds to win $36,668 and move into third place in the overall standings.
It has been an improbable week for Harris, who began the competition in 14th place out of 15 cowboys. After two wins, two runner-up finishes and a sixth-place showing, he has launched himself up the leaderboard.
The 23-year-old has also made more than $131,000 since arriving in Las Vegas — not bad for seven days of work.
Harris now has season earnings of $288,064.06, and he’s poised for his best finish ever in the world standings. He technically has an outside shot of catching Shad Mayfield ($388, 930.78) for second place, but Riley Webb ($411,828,93) is too far out in front for anyone to reach except Mayfield.
San Angelo’s Dylan Hancock finished in third place Wednesday in a time of 8.0 seconds to earn $21,882. The 21-year-old sits in sixth place in the overall standings with $248,540.49.
San Angelo’s other competitor in the event, Ty Harris, continued to have a rough NFR. He failed to record a time for the second consecutive night and remained in 12th place with $176,767.47.
This is the seventh straight NFR appearance for Ty Harris, 27, who finished in fourth place last year for his best showing.
His brother, Joel, and Hancock are each making their second appearance on the sport’s biggest stage, giving San Angelo three of the top tie-down ropers in the world.
The 10-round NFR will continue with Round 8 on Thursday at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.
