On September 1, 2023, at approximately 12:56 pm., San Saba Police Officers responded to a Traffic Crash with Property Damage incident in the 100 block of South 10th Street.
Upon officers' arrival and a preliminary investigation, a 2020 White Ram 2500 turned on to South 10' Street from West Wallace Street. The driver of the truck then turned into the parking lot of the San Saba Middle School. The truck continued to drive through the parking lot, onto the walkway, and into the main entrance of the San Saba Middle School.
The driver of the vehicle then backed up and left the scene of the traffic crash. The building was extensively damaged as a result of the traffic crash. While investigating the accident, it was determined the driver of the 2020 Ram 2500, was a 56-year-old male.
The driver of the vehicle stated that he drove from Baytown, Texas to dove hunt in the area. Upon arrival to San Saba, the driver of the vehicle was wanting to purchase a ticket for the San Saba football game. While attempting to see if the school was open, the driver had a medical issue and applied pressure to the gas and not the brakes. The driver of the vehicle then left the scene and reported the incident to a San Saba resident, who then notified law enforcement immediately.
After an interview of the driver, it was determined that his Diabetic Neuropathy was the leading cause of the accident. The San Saba Police Department will notify the Medical Advisory Board of the driver's medical condition. "We are still investigating the cause of the accident, but we can confirm that the driver of the vehicle was not seriously injured and no one inside the building at the time of the crash was injured. The building sustained significant structural damage and the school district has cordoned off the area for safety reasons We are very fortunate that the school was closed, and no students were on campus at the time of the accident.
We would like to urge the public to avoid this location until further notice. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding." San Saba Police Chief John Bauer.
This investigation by the San Saba Police Department remains on-going.
