The Texas Department of Public Safety released the preliminary report on the fatal crash of San Angelo motorcycle patrol officer Sgt. Korby Kennedy Friday morning.
Kennedy was escorting a parade of racing boats being towed on trailers traveling northeast on Knickerbocker Road from Lake Nasworthy to a local restaurant. The convoy of boats was in the inside lane. Sgt. Kennedy, driving a 2009 Honda patrol motorcycle, was in the outside lane.
A black 2012 Nissan Rogue pulled out of a private drive onto Knickerbocker Road in front of Kennedy’s motorcycle. Kennedy hit the front left quarter panel of the Rogue.
The driver of the Rogue was Cynthia Villareal Quigley, 45, of San Angelo. DPS reported that she was uninjured. Quigley’s passenger was 50-year-old Leticia Payne of San Angelo who was taken to Shannon Medical Center. DPS did not list her condition.
DPS reported that the crash happened at 6:05 p.m. Tom Green County Justice of the Peace Fred Buck pronounced 44-year-old Kennedy dead at Shannon at 6:39 p.m., San Angelo Police Chief Tim Vasquez said yesterday.
DPS reported that the sky was clear and the roadway dry. The speed limit on this stretch of Knickerbocker is 40 mph, DPS reported.
Normally, inside the city limits, the San Angelo Police Department leads investigations of vehicle crashes. However, since this crash involved an SAPD officer, SAPD Chief Tim Vasquez asked the DPS to head this investigation.
Update 9:22 a.m.
DPS released a clarification to their report. The driver of the Rogue was not injured, they reported. The story has been updated.
