Thunderstorms Dump Hail, Knock Out Power

SAN ANGELO – Thunderstorms Friday night blanketed the Concho Valley dumping large hail and heavy rain across the entire region and knocking out electricity in parts of San Angelo. 

The National Weather Service issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning and a Flash Flood Warning for the area as that line of near-severe storms approached from the southwest.  Around 5 p.m. radar showed a strong thunderstorm in the Christoval area moving northeast.  That storm was reported to contain lots of lightning and heavy rain.  

The NWS reported .96 of an inch of rain at the airport as of midnight while many areas reported up to 2 inches or more.   

Another heavy thunderstorm was reported around 7 p.m.in the Dove Creek area and over Twin Buttes Reservoir that contains torrential rain and large hail.  Radar indicated the hail was up to 1 inch in diameter. That storm merged with a line of thunderstorms stretching from Mertzon to Sterling City and the jagged system then moved northeasterly over the city of San Angelo flooding low-lying areas. 

There were reports of small hail and heavy rain city wide.  Electric Power was knocked out to parts of San Angelo according to AEP Texas.  San Angelo Police sent out an emergency Nixle alert warning residents not to drive because of flooded roadways.  Pea sized hail was reported in Southland.

There is a slight chance of rain each afternoon for the next few days but heavy rain and severe weather is no expected.
