Sweet New Bakery Opens in Sunset Mall

SAN ANGELO— A sweet new bakery has opened in the Sunset Mall.

On the east side of the Sunset Mall between Conn’s Home Plus and Chick-Fil-A, Sugar High Bake Shop has opened the doors with incredible items and baked goods like the Stuffed Cookie and the Monster Milkshake

“My grandmother taught me how to bake,” owner Sabrina Acosta said, “all from scratch and old school recipes. I actually have a ton of my grandmother’s old cookbooks. In 2018 I had just always wanted to own a bakery. I have a passion about baking. I opened a kiosk in front of Chick-Fil-A and it did incredible well.”

Owners Sabrina and Jess Acosta were both working elsewhere but have since taken the leap of faith and jumped right in. Jess was a sous and executive chef for over 20 years and worked for big chain restaurants like P.F. Chang’s. Sabrina was in H.R. and administrator for a cardiologist in San Angelo.

All the baking passion both Jess and Sabrina brought to the table, along with some challenges in life made them realize that life is short and if they were going to chase their dreams the time was now. They wanted to work for themselves and took a huge risk.

It paid off as there was a “SOLD OUT” sign on several items when they opened this morning.

“We’ve actually had a difficult time keeping up with the bake,” Acosta said, “We’re also doing sandwiches, so we’ve stayed pretty busy.”

But why the Sunset Mall?

“I had a lot of success with the kiosk and with foot traffic,” said Acosta, “I had been doing cakes from home for a while and things like that. So, I had a little bit of a following but I thought the foot traffic would be good and it was, and it exploded.”

Sugar High Bake Shop offers a variety of sweet treats like cereal bars, which flavors do change from day-to-day. They also have brownies, berries, and their best sellers, the Stuffed Cookies.

These are five-ounce cookies that are stuffed with different kinds of fillings. For example, the Cookies & Cream stuffed cookies are stuffed with cheesecake filling and a Pop-Tart Stuffed Cookie, which has strawberry Pop-Tart mixed with the cookie dough and Pop-Tart crumble on top. Of course, there is also a Cookie Monster stuffed cookie which is chocolate chip base stuffed with Oreos and Chips Ahoy.

Cupcakes, cakes, half-pound slices of Cookie Pie, homemade breads, cheesecakes, the milkshakes and plenty more. Brunch and charcuterie boxes along with s’mores boxes are also offered at Sugar High. They have an assortment of different boxes they can put together.

The one thing Acosta wants the people to know?

“We’re here,” Acosta said, “We’re in the Mall and that we are a small, woman owned business.”

Like the Farmer’s Market or the candy shop that just opened, Sweet V’s, small, local businesses or family-owned garden goods, the money spent stays here.

“I had been running other people’s kitchens for so long,” Jess Acosta said, “I was a sous chef for a very long time. Then I worked at Panera and was a training specialist and I did a lot of baking there as well… I worked for P.F. Chang’s as we were doing $5,000 hours. So, I was like ‘If I can produce on this scale for that and I’m seeing pennies, I could do this for myself, do something that I like.”

Owning a small business gave them the flexibility and freedom they needed.

That flexibility is important as Acosta’s 13-year-old son had a kidney disease and was put on dialysis until he received a kidney transplant at the end of last year. He is now healthy as can be.

Sugar High Bake Shop is open Tuesday through Saturday 11:00 a.m. to 8:0 p.m. and is located inside the Sunset Mall at 4100 Sunset Drive between Conn’s Home Plus and Chick-Fil-A on the east side of the mall.
