COLEMAN – Investigators with the Texas Department of Public Safety confirmed Tuesday night that two men were killed in a head-on crash near Coleman on motorcycles.

New information released by the Texas Department of Public Safety confirmed the identities of the two killed as 40-year-old John Roger Ortiz of Lake Charles, LA, and 42-year-old Rogelio Espinoza, of San Antonio.
The DPS stated in the release that a 2017 Nissan Frontier was traveling north on US Highway 84. A 2016 Harley Davidson FLHR motorcycle and a 2004 Harley Davidson FLSTCI motorcycle were traveling south on US Highway 84.
For an undisclosed reason the Frontier steered left across the center stripe striking the motorcycles head-on. The driver of the Nissan was a 72-year-old woman who was taken to Hendricks Medical Center with incapacitating injuries.
Social media rumors alleged that the driver of the Frontier was texting and driving. The DPS could not confirm if this was true or not.

Cars vs motorcycles.... I don't ride bikes for several reasons. Personally, I like the protection that cars and trucks provide, like crumple zones, airbags, seat belts. Bikers are totally exposed and have no protection whatsoever, and the above deceased, helmet or not, had no chance. If I were to hop on a bike, I'd ride it as if every driver out there was trying to kill me.

PermalinkWe know for certain that the driver of the vehicle was not texting while driving. This rumor is nothing more than that. We are uncertain as to what caused the accident, but it appears that the driver may have had a stroke while driving.
