SAN ANGELO – The inability to keep a story straight landed a Mexican national and his faux Tia in the Tom Green County Detention Facility over the weekend.
According to court documents, on Sep. 11 at around 7:53 p.m., a trooper with the Texas Department of Public Safety conducted a traffic stop on a red Toyota Corolla after he spotted the vehicle with an expired license plate.
After the vehicle pulled over, the trooper spoke with the driver of the Corolla, Francisco De La Paz-Cruz, 22, of Michocan, Mexico, who claimed that he was taking his aunt, Oliveria Ramirez-Hernandez, 46, to Utah.
After a little more questioning, De La Paz-Cruz admitted that he had no idea who the woman actually was.
He was then placed under arrest and was charged with Human Smuggling.
Ramirez-Hernandez was also arrested for not wearing a seat belt and an Immigration and Customs Enforcement Hold.
The two were taken and processed into the Tom Green County Detention Facility. De La Paz-Cruz remains in the jail on a $35,000 bond. Ramirez-Hernandez was placed on an ICE hold and was released to the Border Patrol on Sep. 14.
