Former Deputy Killed Ex-Wife & Daughter During Scheduled Meeting

AUSTIN, TX -- The Austin Police Department has released new details in the deadly shooting involving a former sheriff detective and his estranged family.

According to APD, Stephen Nicholas Broderick, 41, and his ex-wife, 35-year-old Amanda Broderick, were scheduled to have a meeting on Sunday morning. The suspect was supposed to meet his son at an apartment complex on Great Hills Trail.

During the course of the visit, the cars of the suspect and Mrs. Broderick crashed and the former detective fired multiple shots.

The shooting would result in the death of Amanda Broderick, the couple's daughter, 17-year-old Alyssa Broderick, and 18-year-old Willie Simmons III.

The couple's son was present at the shooting but was unharmed. He was eventually located away from the scene and turned over to APD officers.

Broderick fled the scene and a massive manhunt began. The former detective was out on bail after he was charged with the sexual assault of a child, a first-degree felony involving family violence.

The disgraced detective was subsequently arrested and his bond was set at $100,000.

Broderick was arrested on Monday morning after authorities received two 9-1-1 calls regarding a suspect walking down the road.

“Just before 7 a.m., we received two calls reporting a suspicious person that said the individual matched the description of the wanted individual," said Manor Police Chief Ryan Phipps. "We had our officers respond to assist Travis County. We were first here on the scene, identified the individual, and took him into custody. We don’t know how exactly he got out here, if he had been walking all night or if somebody provided him a ride."

Broderick was charged with capital murder and is being held without bond. APD detectives are asking anyone with information or video of the incident to call APD Homicide at 512-974-TIPS.

This is a tragic incident that has deeply impacted our community, and I’m glad to report that the suspect has been taken into custody without incident, and with no additional loss of life," said Interim Chief Chacon. "A special thank you to Special Agent in Charge Christopher Combs with the FBI for their strong support, as well as the citizen who spotted the suspect this morning that led to his capture."
