SAN ANGELO, TX – The Department of Public Safety confirmed the suspect who shot Trooper Chad Walker near Mexia Friday night has died by suicide.
According to law enforcement, Trooper Walker was dispatched to assist a driver shortly before 8:00 p.m. on Friday near the intersection of US Highway 84.
When the Walker pulled up behind a vehicle parked on the shoulder, 36-year-old DeArthur Pinson Jr. exited the driver's seat and fired multiple rounds into the trooper's windshield. DPS later confirmed Walker was shot in the head and abdomen.
After shooting the trooper, Pinson grabbed a backpack from his vehicle and fled the scene on foot.
A Blue Alert was issued for Pinson on Saturday morning and a manhunt began.
According to DPS, Pinson later barricaded himself in a home off Highway 84 near Mexica. He would ultimately commit suicide Saturday evening.
According to public records, Pinson had served two sentences for aggravated robbery and criminal trespass.
On Sunday evening, the department confirmed Walker remains in critical condition. Walker is the father to four children, a 15-year-old son, twin 7-year-old daughters, and a 2-month-old daughter.
A GoFundMe was created to help the Walker family. The fund has created more than $74,000 to date.
