ABILENE, TX – A disgraced Abilene attorney is facing more legal trouble after the State of Texas filed a motion to revoke his probation.
In October of 2019, Burt Burnet pled guilty to stealing more than $500,000 from a settlement from a former client.
The client, Nancy Edwards, was injured back in 2012 when her car was rear-ended by an 18-wheeler.
Edwards alleged she only received $90,000 out of the $507,000 she was guaranteed in the settlement.
"It makes me sick and I can't hardly stand it. He stole our money," said Edwards.
By 2017, Burnett's law license was suspended by Texas Bar Association. He would ultimately relinquish his license before he could be disbarred.
In 2020, Burnett was sentenced to 10 years of deferred adjudication.
According to court documents, Burnett "failed to submit to a hair test as directed on or about October 7, 2020."
The documents further allege Burnett tested positive for methamphetamine "on or about September 16, 2020, October 5, 2020, October 12, 2020, November 9, 2020, December 23, 2020, and January 12, 2021."
If Burnett's community supervision is revoked he will serve time in prison.
