Abilene Men Killed in Plane Crash

ROCKWALL, TX -- A Rockwall County Justice of the Peace has confirmed an Abilene doctor and his passenger were killed in a plane crash last Thursday.

According to the FAA, Dr. Donald Lee Wehmeyer, 75, and Curtis Grady Robertson, 64, took off from Abilene at 11:39 a.m. aboard a  Cessna 182.

The preliminary crash reports indicated the Cessna 182 "appeared to attempt a go-around, struck a power line and crashed in a field" nose-first into a field across Rockwall's municipal airport.

According to his obituary, Dr. Wehmeyer served at Dyess Air Force Base as a general surgeon from 1975 to 1977.

After completing a plastic surgery residency at the University of Florida in Gainesville in 1979 and a  hand and microsurgical fellowship at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in 1980, the Wehmeyer family relocated back to Abilene.

Curtis Robertson was born and raised in Abilene. A graduate of Abilene High and Hardin Simmons University, Roberston opened his business, Underwater Connection, in 1984.

The business eventually became  Abilene Sports Connection and offered Taylor County gear and supplies for snow skiing, scuba diving, and more.

During his lifetime Roberston obtained the highest level of scuba certification (Instructor Certifier) and traveled the world scuba diving.

Robertson also completed in Artistic Pool (trick shots on the pool table) and retired with a 5th World Ranking.
