EL PASO, TX — U.S Customs and Border Patrol Agents seized roughly 35 pounds of cocaine from an elderly smuggler following a search on April 14.
The smuggler was a 74-year-old U.S. citizen, who was driving a mini-van where he crossed the border from Mexico at the Bridge of the America's International Crossing in El Paso.
Inspecting officers noticed three large plastic containers in a storage component in the vehicle and requested a canine team to screen the mini-van.
After the drug sniffing dog alerted to the vehicle, CBP agents found the substance inside plastic containers. A sample was tested on site and was confirmed that it was cocaine.
CBP El Paso Director of Field Operations Hector Mancha said, “The team performed flawlessly and used all parts of our layered enforcement techniques."
“I commend the primary officer’s instinct, the canine team, and the officers in the secondary area for stopping these drugs from reaching American communities.”
The drugs were seized and the case is currently under investigation.
