Police: 2 Die in Three Vehicle Crash On I-20

MIDLAND, TX – Monday afternoon two people died in a three-vehicle accident in the 1900 block of East Interstate 20, according to a press release from the city’s spokeswoman. Reports state the wreck involved a Kenworth truck with a trailer, an F-250 pickup, and a garbage truck.

Midland Police Department and firefighters were dispatched to the scene at 2:45 p.m. Monday afternoon. Once on scene officers observed the garbage truck on its top with the pickup truck having extensive rear-end damage. Both drivers were walking around and appeared to be uninjured, according to the release.

Upon further investigation it was determined that the F-250 pickup was traveling westbound in the outside lane at an extremely slow speed because of a traffic jam near the Lamesa overpass. The garbage truck was following right behind it and also was traveling slowly. The Kenworth was also headed westbound in the outside lane approaching the much-slower traffic.

The driver of the Kenworth attempted to make a left-hand lane change to avoid impact as he used his loud audible air horn, but still crashed into the garbage truck’s rear driver side corner, according to MPD. The impact caused the garbage truck to roll forward striking the pickup. Due to the impact, the garbage truck spun sideways, rolled onto its top and came to rest along the westbound shoulder.

The driver and passenger of the Kenworth died at the scene, according to the release. Their names have not been released at this time due to the next of kin having not been notified at this time.
