BIG SPRING, TX – Authorities have arrested 40-year-old Raul Mendez for brutally assaulting Ramiro De La Rosa. De La Rosa ultimately died from the injuries he sustained during the attack.
According to Big Spring Police Department, on March 5th at approximately 1:37 a.m. an officer observed a silver 2004 PT Cruiser parked on the south side of a Kent Kwik. When the officer approached the vehicle, he found De La Rosa slumped in the front passenger seat and suffering from an apparent assault.
De La Rosa was transported to Scenic Mountain Medical Center but had to be airlifted to University Medical Center in Lubbock to be treated for facial fractures. The 64-year-old succumbed to his injuries and died in Lubbock.
During their investigation, the Big Spring Police Department Criminal Investigation Division in collaboration with the Texas Rangers developed a suspect profile. Authorities identified Mendez after they obtained a security video from Kent Kwik that showed De La Rosa’s vehicle parked on the south side of the building.
The video also showed a black 2015 Toyota Camry pull into the same parking lot. Mendez exited the Camry and approached De La Rosa’s car; the victim was in the driver’s seat. The video shows Mendez removing “an item from his left rear pocket which was later identified as brass knuckles. The video shows that Raul Mendez punched Ramiro De La Rosa in the head and face area several times with the brass knuckles.”
On March 18, Mendez was arrested for unrelated charges and authorities had probable cause to obtain an arrest affidavit for the murder charge. Mendez was booked into the Howard County Jail and his bond was set $750,000.
This is an ongoing investigation and no further details have been released at the moment.
