SAN ANGELO, TX – Weather across the Concho Valley has gone from bad to worse Monday night as freezing rain overnight will make bridges and overpasses hazardous.
The National Weather Service Office in San Angelo has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for the Concho Valley until 6 a.m. Tuesday morning. In addition, there is Wind Advisory in effect until 6 a.m. as well.
Periods of light freezing rain and freezing drizzle will mix with sleet at times. Temperatures will drop well below freezing overnight across Irion, Tom Green, Concho, McCulloch and San Saba Counties. Slick spots could develop with patchy ice on roadways, especially with bridges and overpasses.
A strong cold front has moved through West Central Texas today. This front has left behind a cold air mass, with temperatures across the region falling into the 30s.
Temperatures will continue to fall to the low to mid 20s tonight into Tuesday. Patchy sleet and freezing rain may occur across eastern parts of the Concho Valley this afternoon, before ending by around 7pm this evening. Roads may be slick in some spots, especially on bridges.
Strong and gusty north winds will combine with the cold air mass to result in wind chills reaching 5 to 15 degrees across West Central Texas late tonight into Tuesday morning. If you have any outdoor sprinkler system still activated, now is the time to disable the system ahead of these very cold conditions. Low wind chills could cause frostbite.
Dress in layers and cover your head if you plan on being outside. Tomorrow night, lows will once again fall into the low 20s. Very cold conditions may cause damage to pipes and may cause harm to pets left outside, sensitive plants, and any particularly cold sensitive livestock. Make sure they are properly sheltered and fed.
Periods of freezing rain/drizzle mixed with sleet will be possible across the I-10 corridor tonight. A light glaze of ice is possible in this area, with bridges and overpasses most likely to be affected. If you have travel plans, you are encouraged to check on the latest conditions and forecasts before you leave.
This is a serious weather situation.
