All-Concho Valley Softball Team Caps Off 2019 Season

SAN ANGELO, TX -- The softball season has come to an end for area teams after four months of play.

The Concho Valley saw 10 teams advance to the playoffs. Four of those teams -- Mason, Miles, Wall and Winters -- advanced to the second round, where each team's season came to an end.

With all teams eliminated from the postseason, it's time to honor their players for their efforts this season. We kicked off the All-Concho Valley team on Monday by naming Wall senior Ashlynn Box our 2019 MVP.

Below is a list of 36 players nominated by their coaches and selected by San Angelo LIVE! as representatives of the 2019 All-Concho Valley softball team.

Newcomer of the Year

Saleen Jalomo, Fr., C, Winters

Jalomo was head and shoulders above the other candidates for this honor. The freshman battery hit .639 in 80 at-bats with a team-high 39 RBIs, 22 extra-base hits, 33 runs scored and seven home runs. Her knack for hitting the long ball led to a team-high slugging percentage of 1.111. Her bat was integral for the Lady Blizzards reaching the area playoffs for the first time in eight years. The District 6-2A Newcomer of the Year is regarded as someone who “goes all out” in every phase of the game by head coach Kendra Bryant.

Daniella Luna, So., Ballinger

Luna was the lynchpin for Ballinger’s defense. The sophomore was able to hold opponents in check, striking out 100 all season and 74 in district play to earn Pitcher of the Year. She also flashed her leather with a perfect fielding percentage in 33 attempts in district play. What was also impressive was Luna’s bat. She hit .395 with two home runs and 16 RBIs to help the Lady Bearcats finish second in District 4-3A.

Jordan Johnson, Sr., Junction

If you ask Junction head coach April McAdams, Johnson’s pitching kept the Lady Eagles in every game this season and helped for a 12th straight playoff berth. With seven shutouts and a perfect game to her name, Johnson managed 112 strikeouts and had an 11-7 record in 20 games pitched. The senior could also rake, hitting .481 this season with a team-high 23 RBIs. When not striking out batters in the circle, Johnson served as a utility player and posted an .847 fielding percentage with a double play as well, earning Utility Player of the Year honors in 5-2A.

Jesse Armstrong, Jr., Mason

Armstrong was one of the best pitchers in the area. She finished the year with a 9-3 record, 2.75 ERA and 109 strikeouts this season after missing the first couple of games for the Cowgirls’ state basketball tournament appearance. She earned District 5-2A Co-Pitcher of the Year honors for her work. Armstrong also helped her own cause, hitting .432 this season for Mason.

Katie McAnelly, Jr., Brady

McAnelly, a first team All-District 4-3A selection, was a nightmare for opposing hitters. McAnelly struck out an area-best 165 batters this season. She matched that dominance with her glovework, too. The junior posted a .946 fielding percentage in 2019. She also hit the cover off the ball with a .426 batting average and 15 RBIs for the Lady Bulldogs, who made their first playoff appearance since 2016.

Payton Box, Sr., Wall

Box loved to gun down would-be base stealers. The senior caught five runners stealing on 11 attempts this season for the Lady Hawks after missing all of non-district play for basketball. Box was named Co-Defensive Player of the Year in District 4-3A for that. Her bat was also sorely missed in the leadoff spot for the green and white during that time. She hit .396 this season for Wall with an on-base percentage of .515 and 25 runs scored in 15 games played.

Lauren Jalomo, Sr., Ballinger

Jalomo shared 4-3A Defensive Player of the Year honors with Box, and rightfully so. Jalomo posted a fielding percentage of .973 in district play on 73 attempts and turned a double play. She also hit .515 with two home runs and an on-base percentage of .610 in district. She helped the Lady Bearcats get back to the playoffs for the sixth straight season.

Bridgit Herrington, Sr., Mason

Herrington was a dominant force at the plate, hitting .462 with a team-high 31 RBIs, three home runs and an OBP of .583 for the Cowgirls. That earned the senior battery Offensive Player of the Year honors in 5-2A. She was also a vital piece to Mason’s co-district championship and their fourth consecutive playoff berth.

Skylar Lee, Jr., 1B, Winters

Lee was a two-way standout for Winters’ historic 2019 season. The first team All-District 6-2A selection was at the top of the team leaderboard with a batting average of .635, an OBP of .689 and a fielding percentage of .914. She was tied with Saleen Jalomo for the team-lead in RBIs with 39 as well. Lee was commended by her head coach Kendra Bryant for her ability to stretch out at first, which led to more outs. 

Emily Sanchez, Jr., 1B, Central

Sanchez was a big contributor for the Lady Cats as a cleanup hitter. The first team All-District 3-6A selection hit .409 with 15 RBIs and 15 runs scored for Central this year. She also was tremendous in the field, posting a fielding percentage of .950 in 154 attempts and helping turn 4 double plays.

Dylan Tapia, So., 1B, Junction

Tapia was stellar on the field for the Lady Eagles. She hit .452 with 20 RBIs, 20 runs scored and a home run to her name to earn first team All-District honors. Tapia was also known for getting on base with a team-high seven hit by pitches. Her ability in the infield was regarded by April McAdams as giving confidence to the rest of the infield. Tapia had 39 putouts on the year to help Junction to the playoffs.

Kayli Greer, Sr., 2B, Ballinger

Greer was a consistent bat for the Lady Bearcats in 2019. The senior hit .567 in district play with an OBP of .622. She drove in 12 runs and scored 17. Greer was also a steady glove at second base with .771 fielding percentage in district. She earned first team All-District honors in 4-3A this season.

Paige Bauer, Fr., 2B, Brady

Bauer earned Newcomer of the Year in District 4-3A after stepping up and making an immediate impact in Brady’s lineup. The freshman had the team’s highest batting average at .528 and tallied 12 RBIs and 17 runs scored. Bauer also got things done defensively for Brady with an .860 fielding percentage.

Arazeli Reyes, So., 2B, Winters

Reyes continued to amaze her head coach Kendra Bryant all year. The first team All-District 6-2A selection hit .587 this year with 31 runs scored and 13 RBIs from the leadoff position for the Lady Blizzards while only striking out once all season. She also swiped 11 bases. Defensively, Reyes was as good as you could ask for with a .914 fielding percentage on 35 attempts.

Taylor Hunt, So., SS, Wall

Hunt is a player of the future for the Lady Hawks. The second team All-District 4-3A stepped up to be a consistent bat in Wall’s lineup, especially with the early absences of Ashlynn and Payton Box. Hunt led the team in hits with 39, which led to a .464 batting average from the cleanup role after Ashlynn Box. The sophomore also had 19 RBIs and 31 runs scored. In the field, Hunt posted a .902 fielding percentage on 133 total attempts.

Skyler Brooks, Jr., SS, Miles

The reigning All-Concho Valley MVP made a strong case to defend her crown in 2019. The District 6-2A Co-MVP hit an astonishing .790 with 31 RBIs, 59 stolen bases, 54 runs scored and seven home runs this season. She only struck out twice all year. Brooks had an area-best slugging percentage of 1.348. Defensively, Brooks posted a fielding percentage of .886.

Destiny Williams, Sr., SS, Brady

The senior shortstop stood out in both the field and at the plate for the Lady Bulldogs. Williams earned second team All-District honors after hitting .455 with 22 RBIs, 10 runs scored. She also posted a .900 fielding percentage.

Ashton McMillan, So., 3B/P, Central

McMillan followed up a stellar debut year in 2018 with an even better sophomore campaign in 2019. The sophomore played third base for the first half of the season before getting back in the circle for the Lady Cats. It didn’t matter, as McMillan still proved to be the offensive leader for the Lady Cats. McMillan hit .500 this year with 23 RBIs, 13 runs scored and five of Central’s seven home runs this season. Defensively, McMillan posted a .912 fielding percentage for Central to earn second team All-District honors. 

Jackie Covarrubiaz, Jr., 3B, Eldorado

Covarrubiaz led Eldorado’s offense. The first team All-District selection in 5-2A had a team-high batting average of .597. She also had a fielding percentage of .710.

Cambree Schwartz, Jr., 3B, Miles

Schwartz was another dangerous bat in Miles’ batting order. The first team All-District 6-2A selection hit .473 with 25 RBIs, 19 runs scored and a home run to her credit. Schwartz also had a fielding percentage of .875 for the Lady Bulldogs to help them back to the area round of playoffs.

Adair was a phenomenal glove in the outfield, posting a perfect fielding percentage this season. The sophomore also hit .417 with 4 RBIs and 16 runs scored this year. She was named to the first team All-District 4-3A outfield.

Christine Lindsey, Sr., CF, Eldorado

Lindsey held Eldorado’s highest fielding percentage at .778 and was a big part of their return to the playoffs after a year-long hiatus. The academic All-District selection also held a superb average of .490 at the plate.

McKenzie Ventress, Fr., CF, Winters

Ventress was among the trend of youth stepping up for the Lady Blizzards historic season. The second team All-District selection never missed a ball that came her way in center field with a perfect fielding percentage. Ventress also got it done in the batter’s box for Winters in her debut year, hitting .475 with 19 RBIs this season.

Elyssa Korn-Flores, Jr., CF, Ballinger

Korn-Flores was sneaky this season for the Lady Bearcats. The first team All-District selection hit just .270 this year in district play for Ballinger, but held an OBP of .438. Her glove was also big in the field for Ballinger, as she held a fielding percentage of .800 in district play.

Macy McAdams, Sr., CF/C, Junction

McAdams was a do-it-all type of player for Junction. She had to take to the role of catcher this season and had a few spells in center field. Regardless, the senior led the Lady Eagles in most statistical categories and earned Defensive Player of the Year honors in District 5-2A. She held a .950 fielding percentage on 107 putouts and gunned down five runners as a battery. As the Lady Eagles’ leadoff hitter, McAdams held the team-high batting average of .600 with team-highs in walks (26), OBP (.728) and runs scored (42) to name a few. 

Kathryn Hoffman, So., RF/SS/2B, Junction

Hoffman has been a journeyman in the field for the Lady Eagles in two seasons, but she has stepped up for her team, head coach April McAdams said. The first team All-District honoree has found a home at second in the batting order and flourished. She hit .452 this year with 19 RBIs and 32 runs scored. In the field, Hoffman recorded 22 putouts.

Coaches of the Year

Kendra Bryant, Winters; Steve Bain, Wall;

These two coaches had historic years and each claimed district championships, but their paths were rather stark in comparison.
For Bryant and the Lady Blizzards, they flourished with a mix of youth and experience on their squad. That led to the Lady Blizzards claiming their district title and then snapping an eight-year drought without a playoff win.

For Wall, they started off slow -- historically slow. After winning their first two games to open the season, Wall hit a snag. They dropped their next 16 games, including their first ever loss to TLCA. After going 0-2 to start district, they bounced back and closed out the regular season with 10 straight wins to claim back-to-back district titles. They would eventually knock off Crane to advance to the area round for a fourth consecutive season.
