STEPHENVILLE, TX — The Wall Hawks survived a wild fourth quarter to knock off three-time defending state champion Gunter 28-25 on Friday and advance to the state final.
Wall led 14-0 at halftime before Gunter stormed back to take a 17-14 lead with 6:43 remaining in the game.
But the Hawks picked themselves up off the turf and answered with a score to retake the lead with 4:55 to play when Landon York connected with Reid Robertson on a 34-yard TD pass on a fourth-and-2.
It was a gutsy play call, and the Hawks executed when they needed it most to swing the momentum back in their favor.
"We've been practicing that formation and that play," York said. "We lined it up and got the right coverage. I knew Reid was gonna go make a play and the O-line was gonna give me time."
Wall's defense then scored less than a minute later when Dylan Sellers forced Gunter quarterback Tristan Barton to fumble, and Ben Taylor recovered it in the end zone for a 28-17 lead with 3:59 remaining.
Moments earlier, Wall's season looked like it was on the brink before a couple of plays changed everything.
"Those were two legendary plays," Wall head coach Craig Slaughter said of Robertson's TD catch and Taylor's fumble recovery. "Those two plays are helping take the boys to Jerry World."
After Gunter scored with 1:56 left to pull within 28-25, Wall had to punt the ball back, but Levi King's kick pinned the Tigers on their own 2-yard line with 45 seconds to play, and the Hawks defense sealed the win with one last stop.
No. 2-ranked Wall improved to 15-0 and will play No. 4 Newton in the Class 3A Division II state championship at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 18, at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
For the first time since 2020, Gunter's season ends short of the state final. The No. 3-ranked Tigers finished with a record of 13-2.
Gunter ended Wall's season last year 42-32 in this same round, erasing a 15-point second-half deficit.
The Tigers looked like they might do it again Friday when they turned a 14-0 deficit into a 17-14 lead before Wall finished like champions.
Gunter did it all with its backup QB after starter Knox Gage was knocked out of the game late in the second quarter.
Barton, who is just a freshman, did an admirable job leading the Tigers' comeback.
"I wish I knew (what happened in the third quarter)," Slaughter said. "They definitely started running right at us, and that kind of negated some of our speed. Offensively, I'm not sure. We had a three and out, and then a safety and an interception. Definitely the wheels were off there a little bit.
"I think some of that was their championship pedigree. They responded to what we did, and then we responded with a couple late to change that score."
Wall's defense was exceptional with a first-half shutout, while Gunter's defense also stood strong in forcing the Hawks to kick two early field goals.
However, when the Tigers appeared to stop Wall for a third time inside the red zone, the Hawks were aggressive and went for it on a fourth-and-2 at the 13-yard line.
York found Kellan Oliver for a TD pass, then hit Bryson McFarden for a two-point conversion to take a 14-0 lead into halftime.
After Gunter took a 17-14 lead, the Tigers had all of the momentum when another fourth-and-2 play turned the game around.
York's deep TD pass to Robertson was a make-or-break moment for Wall's season, and now they're headed back to the state final for the first time since 2013 and second time in program history.
The Hawks have a chance to bring home the first football state title to Tom Green County since San Angelo Central won it all in 1966.
"What a special deal and what an amazing community. My God, our crowd and our student section were amazing," Slaughter said. "I don't know if it'll soak in until the drive home. I'm working tomorrow. We have one more, and I'm so proud to be part of that football team and part of that community and to get to represent Wall in the state final."
