GRAPE CREEK, TX — A major crash on March Rd. in Grape Creek may have involved a drunk driver.
At the scene on March Rd., north of U.S. 87 and before the Wren Rd. intersection, all traffic is diverted. Authorities recommend finding an alternate route since no traffic will be allowed through until the crash investigation is complete.
According to Jose Rivera, spokesman for the Grape Creek Volunteer Fire Department, the crash was between a white pickup and gold or tan sedan that happened at 8:30 p.m. Saturday night.
Three people occupied the two vehicles. One of the occupants was airlifted to Shannon Medical Center via the Airmed 1 helicopter. The other two occupants refused any ambulance.
When the Grape Creek VFD arrived, smoke was coming out of the pickup and it was doused with water before flames appeared.
The Texas DPS is investigating the crash. During the investigation, a DPS trooper was observed reading the rights to one of the drivers before the driver was placed into a DPS vehicle and driven off. During the questioning, the trooper was overhead asking the detained male if he wanted to accomplish a field sobriety test, a take a Breathalyzer test, or have authorities draw blood.
Responding to the crash were Grape Creek VFD, Tom Green County Sheriff’s Deputies, Texas DPS, and San Angelo Fire Department EMS in addition to Airmed 1.
The pickup truck came to a rest against the fence line of the former Llano School District ranchland that has grazing livestock. The rancher was notified to come fix the fencing.
