ATHENS, TX -- The Athens, TX Independent School District is confirming that a middle student was killed when a train crashed into a school bus Friday afternoon.
The Union Pacific train hit the bus at a crossing in Athens, TX.
The Athens ISD also confirmed a second student, a girl who attends Central Athens Elementary School, was airlifted to Children's Hospital in Dallas.
The bus driver was also injured. No word yet what caused the crash.
“We ask that you join with us in humbly praying for their families,” the district said in a statement.
The crash occurred around 4 p.m. at the Murchison St. crossing in Athens.

As tragic as this "accident" may be, the cause can only be bus driver error, unless some other vehicle pushed the bus onto the crossing. It certainly wasn't the train at fault. Even if the crossing was completely unmarked, the driver had the obligation to stop before crossing.
